To think that brunch is the time period between breakfast and lunch?

I’ve just been invited to a friend’s birthday brunch which is “1-5pm on Sunday the Xth”

THIS IS NOT BRUNCH TIME. Brunch is the period between breakfast and lunch. What is this new trend for misusing the word brunch? Just why? A late lunch is all that’s needed, no need at all to mess with the word brunch.

Yes. This is the hill I choose to die on.

Do they perhaps mean an all day breakfast?

ShirleyPhallus · 27/11/2021 08:21

do you all have no fun in your lives, is eating simply the function and not the social occasion?

Well that’s quite the leap, even for mumsnet

Going to have to disagree with you! I'm from London (The Big Avocado, e.g. brunch capital of the UK) and 1-5 is prime brunch time.

The idea is that it's not a meal that gets slotted in between breakfast and lunch, it's a more social and casual replacement for both. Perfect for days when you wake up super late and want to shake off a hangover with some friends. Hence it's normally the first meal of the day, but also potentially the last if it's a big one. Efficient, I call it!

Peopleoverstuff · 27/11/2021 09:43

What does it matter?

The host is describing the type of food that will be on offer, which is helpful surely? You know not to eat a cooked breakfast that morning! And you know it won't be a formal lunch. [And there is such a thing as an all day breakfast.]

Personally, I would be grateful to receive an invitation, that someone is going to the trouble of catering for me, and seeing as they are going to that trouble, it is their prerogative as to what they call the event.

expatmigrant · 27/11/2021 09:56

I like a brunch to start about 11am with a nice glass of fizz and then carry on all day Wink

I’m with you. That’s not brunch. It’s linner.

@SusieBob

It's not quite breakfast, it's not quite lunch, but it comes with a slice of canteloupe at the end.

@shouldistop

Breakfast 7am-10am Brunch 10am-12pm Lunch 12pm-2pm Afternoon tea 2pm-5pm Dinner 5pm-7pm Supper 7pm-10pm

That's the rules

Far too early for dinner personally. I don’t have supper but would have too if I ate too early as would be starving again before bed. My parents eat 5:30 then are hungry and picking all night long
Hotfootit · 27/11/2021 16:16

That’s an invitation to afternoon tea (not brunch)

Not true.

ImFree2doasiwant · 20/05/2022 21:39

@ShirleyPhallus is it bottomless though?

FatCatSkinnyRat · 20/05/2022 21:40

Sounds weird. Don't go.

onlymyselftoanswerto1 · 20/05/2022 21:41

Zombie thread!

bridgetreilly · 20/05/2022 21:45

I will freely admit to having no fun in my life, but if I’m eating pizza at 5pm, I’m taking my sharpie to deface every menu that claims it is brunch. No matter how many glasses of prosecco they give me.

Dinner at 5? Get fucked. That’s four year old’s tea time.

Supper is bollocks.

You summed up what I was going to say, but better! 😂

As for supper, what even is supper? Second dinner? Are we hobbits?

jammyrose · 20/05/2022 22:14

Ohh, zombie alert.

TopEndChops · 20/05/2022 22:17

🤣🤣 you are totally, not wrong.

Neverendingdust · 20/05/2022 22:24

I think a lot of people use the word ‘Brunch’ because they believe it’s trendy without actually knowing what/when it is. Those of us who brunch regularly would scoff at your friends invite because she is having a lunch party not brunch 😂 or else it would be between the hours of 9.59am and 11.59am.

It sounds like the type of afternoon gathering where Prosecco would be served. I’d stay clear OP 😉

worriedaboutmoney2022 · 21/05/2022 00:01

God I hate "brunch"
Mainly because I end up just eating it as a 3rd meal as I wake up and need breakfast - then I eat "brunch" and by 1:30-2pm need lunch then just go on to have tea
What's the point in it really?

MistyGreenAndBlue · 21/05/2022 01:19

It's an afternoon buffet. Brunch us what we used to call elevenses.

I'm old 😂

Thedogshouses · 21/05/2022 07:11

It's wanna be influencer crap. Brunches in Dubai start around 11 or 12 and go on till about 4pm and are all about being seen. Tiresome and always ends up with a primary school teacher puking over someone or into her fake LV bag.

Piapea · 21/05/2022 07:16

I always thought it was breakfast food at lunch time, rather than just a meal in between the two meals times.

shewasa99 · 21/05/2022 07:54

Brunch isn't (just) a time, it is a type/style of food/catering.

Choufleurfromage · 21/05/2022 08:04

Voord · 26/11/2021 16:24

Yes, of course brunch is between breakfast and lunch. The clue is in the name.

This has irritated me nearly as much as people who describe any photograph of themselves as a selfie even though it’s not a selfie because it was clearly taken by someone else and not them…. Waaaargh!!!

What???? Do people really call those pics selfies??!!! Wtf, the world is bonkers. No point in having language anymore as clearly people just take random words to suit their needs and level of intelligence
I now understand why old people express a wish to die (on a hill or not!!)

picassobride · 21/05/2022 08:08

But supper is at 8pm, what other time would you have it? ( to poster above advocating counter offer).
Brunch is anywhere between 10:00 and12:00 and a fabulous thing it is too.
