AIBU to say no to drinking tea?

DD, 9, had a sip of my tea yesterday and said she liked it and asked to be allowed to drink some more often. I'm not sure. It was after walking back from an activity to the car, so I'm inclined to think it was a warm drink she was after rather than "tea".

I let her drink fruit "teas" which are technically infusions, but not black tea or coffee.

AIBU to think she is too young for proper tea? My main concerns are caffeine, teeth staining, iron absorption.

YABU: let the poor child drink some tea!
YANBU: She is too young, no tea for her!

My 2 year old has a milky decaff tea quite frequently. She has her own teacup.

Can't really see the issue.

Is it hot drinks day today? A tea thread, a hot chocolate station thread .......

We have a 4yo who drinks tea, it’s about the only thing he will actually drink at the minute so not too fussed.

avvemarriia · 26/11/2021 13:31

@DigOlBick

I wouldn’t allow it but that’s because I don’t drink hot drinks and hate that everyone seems to have this addiction to tea and coffee.
How on Earth does someone else's choice of drink affect you this much?!
avvemarriia · 26/11/2021 13:32

It's tea, not absinthe. Just let her have a brew.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/11/2021 13:33

Some sensible 9yos are capable of making their own tea, and offering to make it for the grownups too. I knew one who'd do this and make cakes too. I think she's in her final year of a chemistry degree now so it was probably good training for that not just domesticity. Grin

RosiePosieDozy · 26/11/2021 13:33

Let the girl have her tea Grin Decaf would be absolutely fine. Loads of teenagers drink tea. They've got to be allowed it at some age.

You're obviously not Northern are youGrin

My 2 year old has a cup of tea with his toast in the morning 😱

Jibberjabberhutt · 26/11/2021 13:39

My mum used to give me sugared milky tea in a sippy cup when I was one. I’m early 30s, so not ancient. I do like a cup of tea but have no more than one or two a day, I’m not fat, nor anemic, I don’t have a single filling and my teeth are white. Let her have the occasional cup!

Jibberjabberhutt · 26/11/2021 13:39

My little dog loves a cup of tea, too.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 26/11/2021 13:41

Normal tea is fine for a 9yr old surely?

DD used to enjoy redbush tea with a bit of milk when younger if you're worried about caffeine.

Blimey. What's the world coming to when you can't enjoy a nice brew without being labelled an addict 🥱
TuftyMarmoset · 26/11/2021 13:53

As a non-drinker of tea and coffee I agree with the pp complaining about how it dominates society! Sick of going to meetings where only tea or coffee is offered and not any regular water and people acting like I’m some sort of freak.

I do like mint tea though and I think that could be a good option OP if she hasn’t tried that? It doesn’t have the acidity that fruit tea also has. Rooibos is a good one as well.

So does mine. It's broken DH of his habit of leaving half-drunk cups on the floor or the coffee table. The dog is 15 now so it doesn't seem to have done him any harm.
dottiedodah · 26/11/2021 14:20

I have always had tea, right from about 3 or 4.When a child in the 70s /80s had sugar as well .Best friend gave up sugar when we were about 15 .Never had it since ! I like milky decaff tea /Earl Grey Would DC like this sort of thing .

OhGiveUp · 26/11/2021 14:24

@ItsAllAboutTheLighting Ooh noo, you're doomed 😲
You need to grab your little one and run for the hills fast ( taking a thermos of tea with you of course ) before a crack team of social workers kick your door in.
I'll deflect them as long as I can for you.

Livpool · 26/11/2021 14:32

I don't drink l coffee at all and rarely have tea as I prefer squash (hope it doesn't become habit-forming and I move on to meth!) but some of the replies on here are ridiculous. It's tea! Tea!

Flev · 26/11/2021 14:39

My 3yr old occasionally asks for a cup of tea - she gets a very milky cup made with a decaff teabag and feels very grown up about it! I'd agree with others, make it weak, decaff and unsugared and it'll be fine.

neededafart · 26/11/2021 14:59

I am that awful parent who used to put weak tea in my kids bottles. they loved it! Im off to name change and give myself a parting talk
