Fabric page drama

I am a member of a fabric group on Facebook where the man who runs it has been stealing money and not providing fabric for orders. Some of these were placed months ago. He has mental health issues and a drug problem (I'm not sure what drug if it makes any difference) I have ordered from them before and everything has been good quality and very well priced.

He completely disappeared a few weeks ago and other people were desperately trying to send orders out to hundreds of people but his bank and Paypall have been frozen and he is being investigated for fraud. He has no money to send the orders out so is trying to sell more to get the money to send the older orders.

He is posting photos of his garage which is rammed full of fabric and I really want some. He is doing some packs of random cuts of fabric and it would be very helpful for making some Christmas items to sell I'm just unsure if IABU to buy from him and taking a chance at getting the fabric?

It feels disloyal to the others in the group who are missing a lot of orders but I craft for a side hustle and am desperate for some reasonably priced good quality fabrics to fill my shop with and with Christmas markets starting I really need more. So the big question! Am I being unreasonable or just outright stupid to think that I would ever even receive the fabric? Or is it ok to give it a try and hope the money can help others receive an their orders because he will have the cash to pay for some parcels to go out?

YABU - it's disloyal or stupid or you'll never get it so why try
YANBU - The order will probably get sent out and the money can help others get their order

*I am a very regular poster but have name changed

It’s because the majority of fabric businesses don’t have websites. They run their business via FB groups, they post photos of the fabric and people pay via PayPal. 95% are fantastic but there are some well known dodgy companies. I got caught a couple of times by a particular seller who was notorious on the Fb scammers group

Crafting is NOT a 'hustle'. You are making items from fabric, not running with the county lines.

I am the Pablo Escobar of the local crafting community

I dare say your chances of ever seeing the fabric are close to zero, but if you're happy to run the risk and can comfortably write off the money, I can't see why not.

JunoMcDuff · 25/11/2021 20:16

@SexyNeckbeard

I'm confused why you think you'll get your order when others haven't?
Exactly.
CuteOrangeElephant · 25/11/2021 20:30

I was just going to say join the fabric scammers page!

I think some of them don't necessarily start out as scammers but they get too popular and can't handle the amount of orders.

mumda · 25/11/2021 20:56

A fool and their money are soon parted.

Datsandcogs · 25/11/2021 21:15

Mark is ill and overwhelmed. YABU to even consider buying from him, potentially benefitting from the loss of others. YABES (you are being extremely silly) to consider spending money when you know others have lost out financially.

Puggalo · 25/11/2021 22:21

What group is this, purely out of interest.

Somebodylikeyew · 25/11/2021 22:25

Send me twenty quid and I’ll send you a pillowcase. And a twix.

Offmyfence · 26/11/2021 06:30

Oh course it will be fine, his bank and PayPal are frozen so if you send him money he can't access it anyway.

The photos of the full garage are obviously his and not a google image.

How do you know so much information from a FB site?

FluffyBooBoo · 26/11/2021 06:36

If his bank and PayPal are frozen, how are you paying for it?

Tiredan · 26/11/2021 06:55

Re the garage full of fabric. Fabric is always displayed folded or on rolls. There are a million ways to make a small amount of fabric look like a lot of fabric. How would you be able to tell how much he actually has and how many times he's sold it?

NothingIsWrong · 26/11/2021 07:34

I'm in that group as well, unless you are actually going and physically removing the fabric as you pay for it, you will not see it.

A number of people have been desperately trying to sort his shit out and he's taking the piss by carrying on selling like this

PersonaNonGarter · 26/11/2021 07:37

I love fabric. And have a huge stash. I bet you do too, Op. Let this stuff go!

Briarshollow · 26/11/2021 07:51

I’m so confused why people are so obsessed with fabric?

Eenymeanyminey · 26/11/2021 08:20

@Briarshollow

I’m so confused why people are so obsessed with fabric?
Probably because they sew/craft and fabric is kind of integral to that Hmm

Please tell us the group
Practicebeingpatient · 26/11/2021 09:57

@soughsigh

The price is too good to be true, that's why people haven't got their orders. Buy some fabric from a reputable source for your business.
This. If it seems too good to be true then it probably isn't true. You can order if you want but you will probably end up out of pocket like all the others and it will be your own fault because you knew what the situation was.

As The Streets so eloquently put it ' you can't con an honest John'.

CorrBlimeyGG · 26/11/2021 10:02

The best thing that could happen to this man is FB shut his group down. He's not well and all the drama is only going to make him worse. It sounds like he is self medicating with drugs too. Are you comfortable with feeding someone's drug habit?

I agree, this man isn't well, don't fuel it.

Sure, but enough to send money to someone you know is not fulfilling orders and is being investigated for fraud?? Confused
