Not much traffic on employment issues so I'm trying here.
I've just been offered a job working for a gentleman helping sort out his house. He is paying cash and the hours will be variable.
I'm on universal credit and have not worked for years now.
I understand there will be an assessment period but will I continue to get paid UC in that time or does it go on hold pending the information?
I've asked in my journal but keep getting non-answers and am none the wiser and am worried about paying the rent if it's stopped as the job isn't going to cover much in the way of outgoings.
I get the housing help and have dc under 16 at home.

Hiya!

Your UC will vary depending on what you earn each month. At the moment you keep the first 293 (as you've got children) and then it's 63p to the pound after that (but it's all due to increase soon so you'll be able to keep more.

You'll be better off financially if you're working the only thing I'd worry about is how much the hours would differ as UC usually works in arrears so you might have a great month one month and not so great the next but if your wages don't differ too much then you'll be much better off. I can work out specific sums if you want to tell me exactly what you get and what you'll be earning but don't feel like you have to!

As above but as of yesterday actually changed to you keeping 55p per £ now I believe.

If you go to entitled to website there’s a calculator there you can use to see some figures. I would make it match up to what you currently get first then have a play round with some different income figures to see how it looks.

SomebodysMum · 24/11/2021 19:57

I mean they deduct 55p per £ now instead of 63p that it was before.

You’ll be self employed then? I imagine you’ll have to register possibly and declare all earnings

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 24/11/2021 20:03

OP don’t forget to deduct your travel costs and your national insurance and tax payments from the figures when inputting on the UC “report your income” form. You can also pay into a pension and deduct that too.

At the most I'll be earning £100 a week which will take me over the work allowance.

If I report the change as soon as it happens will I still get my UC or will it be stopped while it's all assessed again?

It won’t be stopped. It will be a change of circumstances and then on the date that your UC claim started (eg the 10th of the month) you’ll get a reminder to log on and report your income and expenditure.
