To quit my job over this

jobprobz · 24/11/2021 19:33

I've started a new job 3 months ago and it's in a nightclub (bar work) I'm a student so it's my only job right now.
Problem is ever since I worked there I have had serious voice strain from shouting over the dj and I really need to quit but after applying for other jobs nothing as of yet so AIBI if I quit and claim jsa until I find something else or should I stick it out until I find something else bearing in mind I have no voice and it's getting worse.

You might not be able to claim JSA if you quit

jobprobz · 24/11/2021 19:35

Really? Would this not be medical?

BeautifulBirds · 24/11/2021 19:36

Can you claim benefits as a student?

Bontanics · 24/11/2021 19:38

No need to shout really just use hand signals to tell people the price. Ear noise reduction ear plugs it will reduce the volume and you can hear spoken word clearer when they're ordering drinks.

arethereanyleftatall · 24/11/2021 19:39

I might be wrong but I wouldn't have thought you can claim jsa if you're a student. Otherwise wouldn't they all be?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/11/2021 19:40

I don’t know much about the benefits system, but given how hard it is for people with disabilities to get the benefits they need, it is fair to assume that anyone quitting their job for a medical reason would HAVE to have that medical reason properly diagnosed and certified by the medical profession.

I am sure it isn’t as easy as simply declaring you can’t work ‘for medical reasons’ and them saying ‘fine - here are your benefits’. Sorry.

jobprobz · 24/11/2021 19:40

I'm not at uni, I'm doing a college course but I'm meant to be working up to 16 hours because my child is 3 so I took this as it fitted around my course and keeps job centre happy but it's killing my throat. I took last weekend off as it was so bad and family all said rest it but it's still the same and not getting better.

How many jobs have you applied for? Everyone is crying out for staff right now, it shouldn't take too long to find something else.

I also thought students couldn't get JSA

AutumnLeaves21 · 24/11/2021 19:41

No you can’t claim JSA if you quit, and of course not on medical grounds. Thousands of people work in nightclubs without issue.

thebear1 · 24/11/2021 19:41

Most full time students are not eligible for JSA so don't assume you can claim.

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 24/11/2021 19:45

Good luck, I can't use my left arm anymore, and have really painful nerve damage after having cancer and have a very physical job and can't quit on medical grounds and claim JSA, I have to wait for them to sack me for being signed off for a long period of time. Its not all that easy.

jobprobz · 24/11/2021 19:49

I'm already claiming universal credit I just have to be in work or looking for work to receive it but with this job I am working the required hours for the top up, my partner also works full time so it would be a case of going back to where I was before I took this job and looking for work but now I've taken this I'm screwing my voice more every shift and literally for nearly 3 months I have just a strained whisper nobody can hear.

OP posts:
NewlySingle2021 · 24/11/2021 19:51

I doubt you'll get JSA. Is there no other job with similar shifts you can go to where you don't have to shout?

candycane222 · 24/11/2021 19:53

I think you have a good chance of finding another job as pps said. Eg in a nice quiet restaurant. But definitely go to the doctor about your voice. Some replies are a bit unkind here, you could genuinely injuring your larynx, like singers sometime s do.

wonderpants · 24/11/2021 19:54

You could ask for speech therapy?
You need to learn to project your voice by breathing in deeply rather than straining your vocal chords.
I lose my voice every year with a cold as a primary school teacher, literally no sound! I still manage to teach, although it looks funny!

jobprobz · 24/11/2021 19:55

I hope so that's what I'm looking for but haven't got one yet, been looking for any work but I went to an interview at a shop and had no voice just a whisper which I'm hoping they'll over look as it otherwise went well so my fingers are crossed for that one but I just want out of this job so I can rest my voice and recover.

You need to get another job before quitting - have you started looking?

IfIwasablackbird · 24/11/2021 19:57

Recruitment in hospitality is an applicants market at current. Which part of the UK are you based in? Most places are desperate for staff.

SummerHouse · 24/11/2021 19:58

I think you need to go to GP.

jobprobz · 24/11/2021 19:58

@wonderpants that's exactly what I need as I am softly spoken and people always say speak up or project your voice I'd love to know how people do that.

Borderline Devon/Cornwall

GreenClock · 24/11/2021 20:04

Hospitality is short staffed currently. I’d try to find a job in a quiet pub or a restaurant. Don’t carry on like this OP.

skodadoda · 24/11/2021 20:07

OP, you should consult your doctor and get signed off sick. You need to rest your voice. If your working conditions are causing the problem then you could expect your employer to make reasonable adjustments. You would be wise to seek some professional advice.

HippeePrincess · 24/11/2021 20:07

If you course is classed as "full time" even if it's college not uni, which could mean anything over approx 20 contact hours ish, then you don't need to seek work. I was only in 2.5 days 9-3 & 9-12 but it was classed as full time due to a study afternoon and expected self directed study.

MrsColon · 24/11/2021 20:14

Try waitressing, loads of places are struggling to get staff, and the tips are handy. Much better than shouting at drunken teenagers all night!
