Can’t Christmas just be enjoyable, glitzy, fun, kind, generous? Not MAGICAL.

And yes I am due a username change …

Try ‘magickal’,

I feel the extra k changes things.

JaneJeffer · 24/11/2021 17:21

The magic is the only good part.

DrSbaitso · 24/11/2021 17:25

I'm glad you said it. It's been irritating me for ages. The contrivance.

KikoLemons · 24/11/2021 17:49

Bloody ridiculous - last thing it is! Hard work, yes, Sometimes fun, yes. Ten days off work - if you're lucky. But magical FFS!!

CanofCant · 24/11/2021 18:01

Making magical memories with my little family. Blurgh.

BlackberrySky · 24/11/2021 18:13

Magical is right up there with making memories, feeling blessed and holidays being a little slice of heaven.

I hate the term ‘big day’ when talking about Christmas. All the magazines are full of it, as are the cooking shows. I also hate ‘trimmings’ when talking about Christmas lunch. Gives me the gids.

GlamorousHeifer · 24/11/2021 18:18

Time off work, a few lie ins and a good piss up for me! Although I do sort of hope it's magical for the kids so I'm on the fence, sorry Grin I'll exit the thread now haha .....

For me there is something quite magical about Christmas Day.
Even now as an adult with adult children, I love the excitement of the day. The surprise presents. Eating together. Phone calls wishing each other happy Christmas.
Relaxing with loved ones.
The queens speech.
Downtown Abbey, dr who , call the midwife, wine, chocolate and mince pies.
The Beauty of the Christmas tree.

Threewheeler1 · 24/11/2021 18:26

I always feel at my most magical when sweating my tits off over the hob and oven so that everyone can eat loads of food then moan about being too full before they go on to eat more food.
This year I might magic myself out to the shed and they can eat cat food.

I think it annoys me because a) it's so contrived and b) it's so often used to justify some really, really non-magical and often quite angry, judgemental or self-serving sentiment. You know..."I've threatened my kids with no gifts if they don't believe in Santa Claus, it's necessary for the MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS", or "Any tradition that isn't what I like is wrong because it ruins what I deem to be the MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS" and "I can dictate every second of the day for everyone else because I'm engineering the MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS" and so on.

the80sweregreat · 24/11/2021 18:33

Nothing magical about it at all.

Reallybadidea · 24/11/2021 18:38

Magical schmagical.

Yes to contrived. See also Christmas Eve boxes, 'outings', elf on the sodding shelf.

I've turned into my grumpy dad Blush
