Secondment at work

GoogleJuicer · 23/11/2021 20:12

Hello,

Not sure this falls under ‘Employment Issues’ and posting here for traffic.

A manager for another team has informed me that there is a secondment on her team coming up. She said this in the kitchen to me.

I guess that’s a good sign!?!

I also don’t know why a company would get a secondment internal for 6 months?

I’m mid thirties but new to office work etc.

Maternity cover?

ShirleyPhallus · 23/11/2021 20:15

She might have been hinting to you that you should go for it but equally she might have been making small talk about what she has on

Does the role and level link up to what you’re doing at all? Have you got any interest in it? Worth a chat with HR if so but I wouldn’t take it as “a good sign” by reading in to it too much

It’s a new position but don’t know if they’ll get funding in 6 months

They may be testing to waters to see how this role would work if it is a new thing. And they may be encouraging you to think about doing it - sounds like a feeler was put out for you.

Thanks.

The advert should be going live soon. I emailed the lady (she wasn’t in the office today) and thanked her etc

No worries - we often have proof of concept projects so we have funding for a certain amount of time to see if what we think will actually work in practice. Then the powers that be can decide if this is a goer. A secondment is an attractive way to do this because it gives the secondee some security if it does not work out or get funded for longer. Good luck with it - sounds exciting!

Make sure that your main post is safe to return to at the end. If it is them its good experience and a great way to find out more about the company and people you're working with.

It should be in the sense that position will always be available (call centre type work that can’t out source). Is there anything else I need to consider?

Why not outsource?
