To be annoyed with neighour feeding the fox

My neighbour feeds the fox, which has now turned to foxes, they keep eating my chickens. They are having to be shut in to protect them, which miserable!!

We've had an offer of help by shooting them. I said to my neighbour we wouldn't do that, of she stops feeding them. She thinks I'm unreasonable.

We've had the odd fox attack over the years, it's part of country life, but now we're over run they literally take any birds and fight with dogs and attack the cat.

It's wrong on every level

Your opinion.

There is an Avian Flu lockdown.
All poultry have to be locked up.
So comply with the Law

Pat123dev · 23/11/2021 21:17

Read the whole post.....they're in a barn.

FFS foxes attacking cats and dogs is urban myth!

No it's not. We live in the middle of town and a big dog fox ran across my neighbour's garden and killed her Yorkie while he was no more than six feet away from her. He just shook it by the neck and killed it outright.

Neighbours a few houses down had been feeding the bloody fox.

TabithaTumbler · 23/11/2021 21:24

Foxes will happily kill every chicken if they get into a run - they don’t kill just to eat. They kill to kill. And may eat some if hungry. But one fox will happily kill all of the birds in the run.

And again for the people at the back, foxes DO NOT kill for the sake of it. They will kill everything to cache it so they can eat it later. Much the same as we bung the leftover lasagne in the freezer because we can't eat it all in one go.

SpringCrocus · 23/11/2021 21:30

Foxes kill and cache the dead carcasses for later consumption

leotardrock · 23/11/2021 21:45

We had some out the back of our garden, they really terrorised the cat - he wouldn't even go out in the back garden.

I got rid of them by getting DH to wee in a watering can & spread it out the back (not the garden - the alleyway at the back)

It worked and they buggered off but I don't think it would have worked if someone was feeding them chicken carcasses!

KissedintheDark · 23/11/2021 21:52

Foxes will come for your chickens day or night.
Poor little hens are absolutely defenceless and rely totally on you to keep them secure at all times.

Intercity225 · 23/11/2021 22:04

I can't believe the number of people who think feeding wild animals is ok.

What is wrong with feeding hedgehogs?

Foxes are native...cats ,dogs, chickens are not.Why would your cat have more rights to be outside than a fox does?It must be irritating ,but harming wild animals is not the answer.
These foxes are being treated like pets. This is not natural for them.

She needs to stop feeding them.

stillvicarinatutu · 23/11/2021 23:42

Casts kill for fun . How many wild birds are lost to cats who play with them and kill them and leave them ?
You have a cat - now please don't get me wrong because I had 2 . One never killed a thing in its life the other was dreadful as a younger cat and I was daily taking mice , shrews and voles off her to
Release .
Foxes kill to come back to eat later . Cats kill because it's their instinct . They don't need to kill because most get fed .

How is the fox any different? I love foxes but I wouldn't necessarily feed them as your neighbour is as I wouldn't want them to forget how to hunt and become reliant on tins .

House your chooks well.

Keep the cat in at night .

Use that stuff from Amazon if you don't want them in your garden and then spare a thought for your neighbour who might not want your cat in hers .

Gubanc · 24/11/2021 00:54

I'll start feeding the native pigeons from
now on. Just to see what the neighbours think.

Yournamehere007 · 24/11/2021 03:01

I think you needcto move house to somewhere with less wildlife and rehome you chickens.

Surely anyone who feeds birds feeds the pigeons?
Biker47 · 24/11/2021 08:41

@DiscoStusMoonboots

Foxes are a protected species - you can't shoot them.
You can shoot them.
Chocolatewheatos · 24/11/2021 08:47

She shouldn't be teaching wild animals to come close to humans. It's dangerous for them, some humans are vile and will hurt them.

You shouldn't even be considering shooting wild animals. Secure your property to protect your animals. Your chickens don't have more right to roam than the foxes.

anon12345678901 · 24/11/2021 08:49

Foxes are not pets, they are wild animals and can hunt for themselves. Humans should not be feeding them or treating them like pets.

anon12345678901 · 24/11/2021 08:51

You can shoot foxes, they aren't protected. You just have to have landowners permission and the firearm certificate. It's not illegal to do this.

TangerineDreams · 24/11/2021 09:03

@ATTA45

FFS foxes attacking cats and dogs is urban myth! I've seen my dopiest cat chase off a fox numerous times! You are either a scaremonger or you're trying to justify not liking foxes, either position is shit.
Watched one myself kill a cat. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Whyyyyyyyohhhhhwhyyyyyy · 24/11/2021 17:29

I'd rather deal with foxes than live next door to chickens, least with foxes there's no risk of mice and rats, because let's face it wherever there's a chicken coop there's mice.

I personally love seeing the foxes at night on the front of my house. Yabu wanting to shoot a family of foxes because your Sunday dinner (sorry chickens) are getting upset.
