In the last fifteen minutes I have heard this story on two separate radio stations, read three articles about it and saw it on a TV news bulletin.

A six-year-old boy was left in ‘floods of tears’ at his first ever rugby match after being vomited on by a drunk fan during Wales’ dramatic win over Australia on Saturday.

It should have been a day to remember for Joey Delaney, who was ‘so excited’ to see Wales play for the first time, but instead his outing was soured when the youngster and his parents were all thrown up on by an intoxicated fan.

Joey’s mother, Sophie, said there was vomit everywhere and the fan had been so drunk he ‘did not say a word afterwards’ and was entirely oblivious to what he had done.

The fan, who was ‘slumped over his seat’, had already spilled his drink on Joey earlier on in the match and Mrs Delaney and her husband had considered leaving early.

‘It was really hard because it was apparent he was asking to leave but I thought if we leave now, that’s going to be the feeling that we are left with,’ she told BBC Radio Wales.

‘I didn’t want to have that as our last memory. I was really fighting back tears because he was so upset, I was upset, my husband was upset, and a little bit angry, and I was holding them back to make sure he was alright.’

Somewhat surprisingly the drunk fan was not removed from the stadium, though other supporters rallied together after the incident – offering tissues and anti-bacterial gel to clean up the mess – while the family were eventually moved to new seats.

‘A man came over and knelt down on his [Joey’s] level and wanted to give him his Wales shirt… the reaction was really heart-warming,’ Mrs Delaney added.

Despite being thrown up on, Joey is still keen to attend more matches after watching Rhys Priestland’s last-gasp match-winning penalty.

‘Joey has been amazing, yesterday he didn’t even mention it – all he talked about all day was the positives,’ Mrs Delaney said. ‘So the experience as a whole was amazing and he’s excited to go again.’

The Welsh Rugby Union said they were ‘sorry to hear about the family’s experience’ and insist most fans at the stadium behave responsibly, though they will be in contact with Mrs Delaney after reviewing the steward’s report.

I heard that on the way home. My first thought was that there would be no way I’d stay at a match if my child had been vomited on! I’d want to get them in the shower.

If they were considering leaving after they’d had drink spilled on them why stay covered in vomit? Confused

Rainbowsew · 22/11/2021 18:55

Well they obviously want to play on people's heartstrings/pressure the club to give freebies...

I agree with pp, I'd be setting off home for a bath! Envy not envy!!

Winterfellismyhome · 22/11/2021 18:56

She wants free tickets

Costumeidea · 22/11/2021 18:58

Oh God, this is literally one of my worst nightmares.

EmeraldShamrock · 22/11/2021 18:58

It's today's normal to broadcast even the silliest life events by certain people.
I doubt he'll be embarrassed forever, the fan who vomited on him should be.
Fans who are intoxicated shouldn't be allowed to attend a match, they're a H&S nightmare.

TheMarzipanDildo · 22/11/2021 19:09

I read one the other day where a mother was complaining that she had received a letter from school telling her that her five year old was overweight. The article had loads of accompanying pictures of her child (who was admittedly very healthy and not overweight looking). The mother’s point was that getting these letters might be bad for a child’s mental health/lead to bullying.

Unlike plastering your child all over the press alongside the letter. Hmm

She was under no obligation to tell her child or anyone else about the content of that letter, or indeed take any notice of it.

SoniaFouler · 22/11/2021 19:31

@EmeraldShamrock
I doubt he'll be embarrassed forever

Well I beg to differ, this story will, throughout his life (unless he does something way more important and even that will not erase this) be the first thing that comes up when any potential employer, partner or anyone searches his name online.

I saw that too @TheMarzipanDildo and felt so sorry for the girl

It’s not news is it?

TillyTopper · 22/11/2021 20:02

She just wants free tickets.

MadeOfStarStuff · 22/11/2021 20:05

There are far more embarrassing stories that people go to the papers about. Like their child being unable to wear school uniform because they’re so overweight. Or a child that had reduced choices for school lunch because they’d spent ages in the toilet before going to eat.

At least in this story it’s someone else who did the thing they’re complaining about!

But I agree, no need to go to the papers, they just want attention, free tickets and free stuff

HikingforScenery · 22/11/2021 20:38

I don’t understand why the story is embarrassing for a 6 year old?
The fan is the one who needs to be embarrassed.
The saddest of all is that loads of people will read this and say it’s to be expected at sporting events. Disgusting behaviour really.

FreedomFaith · 22/11/2021 20:43

How is this going to affect the kids future job prospects? Are you saying you'd actually not give someone a job because if this? Grin That says more about you than it does about the parents.

If an employer did look it, it would probably be used as an ice breaker at best, something to have a laugh at, but chat about the experience of going to a big match too. Anyone who actually uses that as a reason to not hire him is very weird.

rrhuth · 22/11/2021 20:46

I don't see how it is embarrassing to him. I am very shy and wouldn't do this, but I don't think badly of the mother, some people like to express themselves and make a fuss when they have had a bad time.

I feel a bit sorry for the boy, it should have been a treat and the drunk person spoilt it. I think it would be nice if he got a free ticket tbh. I know it is not the end of the world but it does sound like a shame.

PearlclutchersInc · 22/11/2021 20:47

Hiking the drunk should have been named and shamed. No need to get that drunk during the day and before the match.

Expected at a sporting event - shouldnt be; people really need to get a grip of their alcohol consumption especially if they cant handle it.

Acrasia · 22/11/2021 20:51

I should think his name is common enough that in twelve years time when he is looking for work it won’t be particularly high on search engines.

RubyTuesday70 · 22/11/2021 20:54

We had a nightmare once at at rugby match with drunks in the stand........ I've never gone again, it was so off putting.

People who can't hold their drinks at a family match surrounded by kids should be removed.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 22/11/2021 20:57

Same reason people go public when their kids are too fat for school uniform or they're sent home from school for wearing trainers.

Because they're thick.

ThorsLeftNut · 22/11/2021 21:04

Attention. Make a fuss, get noticed, get free goodies/tickets/shite.

Foolsrule · 22/11/2021 21:18

Agree with PP. The drunk should be named and shamed. Possibly charged with assault? Disgusting man!

Santastuckincustoms · 22/11/2021 21:22

I was once on the last train home and a man came down the carriage, quite obviously very drunk, pushed into this woman standing (it was packed) and then vomited all over her. It was awful, she had to then stand there for another 20 mins as it was so packed she couldn't even make it to the loo and everyone just had to try not to touch her. A few people offered tissues but really it was just horrendous. Poor woman.

Mantlemoose · 22/11/2021 21:36

Free tickets and compensation innit!

EmeraldShamrock · 22/11/2021 22:01

Make a fuss, get noticed, get free goodies/tickets/shite.
She should be offered those things regardless, clubs have a responsibility to fans, venues etc need to ensure user safety, they shouldn't be allowed to let senseless drunk louts ruin it for anyone.
She could probably take a civil case against them.
I'd be enraged if it was my child.
Luckily her DC got on with it, some would be traumatised as an adult I'd feel violated by a drunk puking his stomach contents on me.

EmeraldShamrock · 22/11/2021 22:05

Well I beg to differ, this story will, throughout his life (unless he does something way more important and even that will not erase this
He is a victim and hopefully this story will make clubs reconsider pissed fans.
Why would anyone hold the story against him? He was innocent and his day was ruined.

Charlize43 · 22/11/2021 22:10

Looking for freebies. I bet she has an instagram account with herself and her family plastered all over it. She won't have considered her child's right to privacy at all.
