Do you ever play the lottery?

My DH thinks I am an idiot for spending about £5 on the lottery yesterday. It was the first time I have played in years.

Just a bit of fun, really.

He thinks it's a complete waste of money that would have been better spent on just about anything else.

Ah. What is my AIBU.
AIBU to occasionally 'waste' a fiver.

I buy a scratch card every week and regularly win small amounts which is fun, and I buy a ticket if its a big rollover. A win would make a massive difference to my life, spending £2 a week doesn't.

vampirethriller · 22/11/2021 12:06

Sometimes get a scratch card, if I like the picture on it! I won £40 on my last one.

Anycolourwilldo · 22/11/2021 12:09

I see it as voluntary tax for UK sports. I sometimes do it. It's nice to dream!

SequinsandStiIettos · 22/11/2021 12:09

About twice a year I buy a lucky dip and about once a quarter a scratch card. When it first started, I used to get a ticket a week, when it was a quid. When the put it up 2013, I just felt I couldn't justify the outlay.
I remain irrationally angry at Camelot though, for ruining Derren Brown's stunt (yes, the shake showed it to be camera tricks anyway but the twist ending planned...kids pulling out the predicted numbers months before at Xmas, Camelot refused to give permission for, which seemed very churlish at the time).

nosyupnorth · 22/11/2021 12:25

I play for the fun of that very slim chance but I only play very occasionally because it can be very easy to start frittering silly amounts of money away and not think about it because it's a few quid at a time a fiver as a one off is not totally unreasonable, though I'd wonder at buying more than one ticket since surely you know the odds as so poor, but I would be judgeing somebody who bought multiple lottery tickets more than a few times a year.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 22/11/2021 12:30

I play very occasionally - perhaps twice a year? I had a tenner's worth of tickets last time there was a big Euromillions rollover (won a whopping £4.50). A fiver is the cost of coffee and cake, or a pint, or a magazine - all non essentials but brighten one's day now and again.

ParkheadParadise · 22/11/2021 12:38

Occasionally I buy a lucky dip.
I do play the postcode lottery. The most I have won is a tenner. Recently, they have started to give out crappy prizes like books and I won a chopping board first time I used it the handle broke 😂😂😂 I would prefer the cash.
Jeff Brazier ringing my bell with a massive cheque will do nicely.

Biker47 · 22/11/2021 13:16

Only really play when the euromillions gets into 9 figures, and I'm not going without anything else when I play the lottery so not really missing out on anything vital because of it. A good evenings spent day dreaming for a couple of quid on a really long shot is the way I look at it.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 22/11/2021 13:19

No. I used to occasionally but stopped when they put the price up and added more numbers.

No interest in scratchcards etc.

GodIsAVegan · 22/11/2021 13:20

We set up a few lines online years ago so that just continues. I don’t think about it, occasionally I get an email to tell me I’ve won something, more often I get an email saying I’ve won a lucky dip.
If you can afford it, YANBU.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/11/2021 14:02

Yes, I do play. It costs a tiny amount of my disposable income and I spend little or nothing on other things that many other people spend hundreds or thousands of pounds a year on.

OP, unless you are on the breadline and/or your DH never spends money on non essentials he has no say on what you spend your money on, as long as household bills are covered between you with both of you fairly contributing.

MatildaIThink · 22/11/2021 14:05

I do occasionally, Euromillions when it is huge. I accept it is a waste of money but to me the cost is irrelevant and I probably only spend £10 a year on tickets.

DaisyWaldron · 22/11/2021 14:08

I buy a ticket once or twice a year. I think of it as the price I am prepared to pay to enhance the realism of my fantasy of winning the lottery.

Iseeyoulookingatme · 22/11/2021 14:12

I normally get a ticket twice a month. I never used to play it at all but I don't mind spending a £5 a month. I wouldn't spend more than £10 a month though.

Aprilx · 22/11/2021 14:20

I have bought lottery tickets only a handful of times since it started and cannot remember when I last did. I am not against it in principle though, it just isn’t something I think of. Occasionally DH will buy a ticket.

takingmytimeonmyride · 22/11/2021 15:05

I sometimes buy a lucky dip for the euro millions. Then I go on Rightmove and decide which house I'm going to buy. Then get sad when I don't get an email telling me I've won. Or worse, get one saying I've won, and it's only £2.50 - but then I buy another ticket with it and start all over again. Grin
