Hidehi4 · 21/11/2021 21:38

Just out of curiosity how many people who use this forum has a autistic child who has been diagnosed.
YANBU - child has been diagnosed by a professional

YABU - child not autistic, waiting on a assessment

OP posts:

@x2boys

Im not going to vote as I don't really understand what I'm voting for But my son was disgusting with autism and learning disabilities at the three and a half after seven months of assessment,s he's non verbal and at a special school ,he was subsequently found to have an underlying rare chromosome disorder.
Diagnosed not Disgusting FFS**
LoveComesQuickly · 22/11/2021 11:12

OP to get a random poll I think your post needed a different title.

Bettybantz · 22/11/2021 11:15

This is going to be heavily biased though, because of the title.
Is your child diagnosed with autism? Yes - open thread, no - keep scrolling

MyDcAreMarvel · 22/11/2021 11:18

It’s a lot higher that 1 in 100. An average class of 30 will have 1 or 2 children with autism. It’s more like 1 in 20.

TaraLewis · 22/11/2021 11:24

I have 3 autistics, an autistic dp and I'm also an autistic. I'm heavily leaning towards a genetic element

GADDay · 22/11/2021 11:27

DS1 - diagnosed 19y10m
DS2 - NT
DD - diagnosed 14y5m

spanktastic · 22/11/2021 11:29

Both of my boys have been diagnosed with autism, with both it was also at a young age

spanktastic · 22/11/2021 11:30

And I suspect I'm on the spectrum too,

I agree. The number of autistic children I know both diagnosed and suspected is huge. No way is it 1 in 100.
Branleuse · 22/11/2021 11:33

yes, all my children are diagnosed and so am i

charabanctrip · 22/11/2021 11:34

Ds2 (17) has just been diagnosed and we had to go private because our area only assesses children who have very high personal care needs. Ds fell through all the gaps despite having to leave school in Year 7 due to obvious difficulties and being bullied.

BessieFinknottle · 22/11/2021 11:35

Agree the voting will be heavily biased here (people with autistic children are much more likely to open the thread).
Also, I don't understand your catergories. I'd have separated diagnosed/ waiting to be assessesd and no concerns re autism. I don't understand why you put 'child not autistic/waiting to be assessed' as the same category?

TurnUpTurnip · 22/11/2021 11:37

I won’t be voting as the op hasn’t said why she is interested or given any more information.

BessieFinknottle · 22/11/2021 11:38

At the moment the voting shows that 84% have a child diagnosed with autism...I'm sure you'll agree that's not representative of society in general, or even mumsnet in general.

Why are you curious about this?

TurnUpTurnip · 22/11/2021 11:43

I’ve heard people saying that every poster on Mumsnet seems to have a child with autism so I’m guessing that’s the reason for this thread.

DukkaDukka · 22/11/2021 11:45

Why?

PeanutButterJamming · 22/11/2021 11:45

Teenage DS. He was diagnosed at 5 years old.

daisybrown37 · 22/11/2021 11:49

Two diagnosed. DS1 when 7 and just going into Year 3, was fairly quick process. Referral for DCD started when 5, then this lead to further referrals for ASD/ADHD.

DS2. Diagnosis last week age 8, process was delayed due to Covid. He is in Year 4. Still need to follow up ADHD diagnosis as this is now a separate team.

x2boys · 22/11/2021 11:49

I know loads of kids with autism ,but my son goes to a special school ,half the kids there have a diagnosis of autism as well as other complex disabilities ,and many more probably should do ,plus I'm involved in local disability groups ,so my experience is very skewed ,if I didn't have a disabled child I wouldn't know these things existed .

Daisychainsandglitter · 22/11/2021 11:55

I have two DD's. My eldest had a diagnosis of autism aged 3 years 11 months.
DD2 (aged 4) as far as I can tell is NT.

Cheerychirpy · 22/11/2021 12:20

In Scotland. One diagnosed last year, but the autism diagnosis waiting list is over 2.5 years currently in my area and growing longer all of the time. CAMHS is not a functioning public service.

I have two children diagnosed with autism.
Dd who is three was diagnosed in October but we were verbally told that she would be diagnosed back in May.
Ds who is nearly six was diagnosed a month before his fourth birthday.

I imagine you are already aware but it is a long process which eventually goes to panel after all the assessments. A decision is made jointly then by panel. It always annoys me when it’s made out that autism diagnosis are given out like sweets Hmm
It’s definitely not the case!
