To ask you about your recent induction experience?

Hopefully being induced soon (38w). Wanted to ask anyone's recent experience with their induction and hospital stay? I've heard maternity wards and labour wards are really full, not to mention MW shortages resulting in women waiting days between different steps of their induction or waiting to be admitted in the first place. What was the care like? I'm quite nervous as my prev baby was born before covid.

Thanks in advance.

Why do you need an induction/have you had one before?

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 21/11/2021 13:54

I would say it varies vastly depending on what area you're in. Post code lottery and all. Where abouts are you?

Pricklypear12 · 21/11/2021 14:00

@Justheretoaskaquestion91 precipitous labours. This will be my second induction, third child

I've had two inductions, one pre-Covid and one during. The only real difference was not having DH on the ward with me. I didn't realise there were visiting hours, but we live ~50 mins from the hospital and we had a 18mo, so he didn't visit. By the time I was ready to head to the labour ward the baby was coming so fast that DH didn't make it on time. I went from 3-4cm to 10cm in an hour and a half!

Other than that the care was superb; I couldn't fault them in any way.

You'll be fine, but second babies tend to come quickly so keep your DH nearby!

I'm really sorry but this was exactly my experience in July. Waiting around for days. Balloon, pessary, waters Broken , drip, all big delays between each waiting for a bed. Then an EMCS as baby got distressed

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 21/11/2021 14:04

Ah ok. Im nowhere near you, but my induction and hospital stay we're a terrible experience. I dont think itd be helpful for you to hear about it though. Unless you want too?

Pricklypear12 · 21/11/2021 14:16

I suppose I'm just getting an idea of everyone's experiences (good and bad) so I can have an idea of possibilities and what I should do about them should they arise. For example I intend to ask immediately if there's capacity for them to follow through with the full induction (I labour quickly anyway so fingers crossed it's the same) and if they don't then I will simply refuse being started off and just go home and wait it out until there's beds to do everything etc whether they're happy with that or not

My induction lasted 24hrs and ended in an emergency csection and sepsis for both me and my son. I dont remember much but I do remember A LOT of pain. He narrowly avoided NICU and we were closely monitered for 6 days hospital stay. I wasnt allowed any visitors.

The whole experience was fucking awful and ive had CBT once a week for 4 months that helped me process things.

UnLunDun · 21/11/2021 14:38

38 weeks, had my waters broken, nothing else, and 14 minutes later she popped out. Care has been brilliant with all my children, in city and rural hospitals. Good luck, try not to worry about things that may not happen, I know that can be hard but keeping as calm as possible will help any situation that arises.

spookysoul · 21/11/2021 14:40

Induced in Dec 2020 so during lockdown. Wasn’t particularly happy with my care, gaps between pessaries were far too long IMO, no one seemed bothered about asking me how I was doing. EMCS like a lot of other people have said. Then when I was recovering I had to keep getting out of bed to turn my own buzzer off (in absolute agony, barely able to move) because they couldn’t be arsed to PPE up to come in my room. Also left completely alone for hours with my baby after surgery with no one having checked on me, or even asked if I knew what the hell I was doing, I was in too much pain to lift, dress or change him myself but they didn’t seem to even consider this.
Sorry to be such a downer but I don’t get to talk about this much and it really affected me. I don’t imagine it will be so bad now.

Pricklypear12 · 21/11/2021 21:47

@saamantha19881*@Letsallscreamatthesistene @spookysoul* I'm sorry all of your experiences were all so awful!

@UnLunDun that sounds literally perfect! 14 mins! Were you already very dilated or in labour or something?!

OP posts:
Pricklypear12 · 21/11/2021 21:50

@sbhydrogen its third baby so I'm hoping it's still quick and not tricky although I've heard stories about 3rd DCs. I was the same with my DC2, 2cm to baby out in under an hour during last induction

UnLunDun · 22/11/2021 11:27

@Pricklypear12 nope, wasn’t in labour at all, and only dilated as much as you are once you’ve had multiple births lol. Her baby sister has actually just taken longer, waters broken the same and 5 hours. I’m quite efficient at this I think, had so many they pop out like peas 😂😂😂.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 22/11/2021 11:50

Last week I was induced and then ready for delivery suite but there were not enough beds / midwives.

After a couple of days waiting I transferred hospitals to where a space was available.

Sorry it's not good news but I think I'd have been better prepared mentally (and with snacks) had I known in advance.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 22/11/2021 11:52

I should add that although there was a long wait between stages for the space on DS, the care was still exceptional on the ante natal ward.

They just weren't prepared to overcrowd the delivery suite and compromise on care and safety.

Allthingsfloralandpatterned88 · 22/11/2021 18:04

Sorry to also do a downer one but I was induced in July. Balloon on the Monday out on the Tuesday at lunchtime and then we waited for 2 days for a delivery ward space because they were overstretched. Then EMCS on the Friday morning because DS was stuck all along!

I can't fault the care but it was a long drawn out experience and felt like ages in hospital (plus a week after he was born but that's another story). Next time I am going for a ELCS booked in! Bring snacks!

Allthingsfloralandpatterned88 · 22/11/2021 18:10

Forgot to add good luck op and congratulations on almost meeting your LO!
