To think it's weird that our school only has pictures of white children on its website?

Just that really. We live in an area that's increasingly ethnically diverse and my own children are mixed.

There is a mix of white, black, Asian and mixed children in every class, in every year.

They just updated their website and have taken lots of new pictures of pupils to put onto it, but they've chosen only white children.

I know it's not massively important in the grand scheme of things but it did make me sit there and think 'oh, this might have been a decision that was made' and it's made me feel a bit funny.

I find this so bizarre it is hard to believe. Like most people, I would have expected the other way around, that the diversity would be over rather than under emphasised.

Marmite27 · 21/11/2021 12:00

We’re a white family and the school the kids attend is ethnically diverse.

I’d be fuming if there were only white kids pictured on the website. Please address it with school.

Wannakisstheteacher · 21/11/2021 12:04

Sounds very odd. Looking at the website you’d assume there were very, very few white children at my DC’s school when actually they make up approximately 80%.

kowari · 21/11/2021 12:06

It's normally the other way around. It looks like the white families self selected that they wanted to be part of the website and the others didn't return the form or similar.

TheGirlCat · 21/11/2021 12:23

As you describe it, it is not a school that has a few non-white children in the entire school. It has a few non-white children in each class, so yes it is definitely weird and quite racist. I would email them and ask them why, considering a considerable percentage are non-white. The local schools in my area (rural town) are like 97% to 98% white, and they still have 2 or 3 local non-white children in their advertising and on their website promos.

Starlightstarbright1 · 21/11/2021 12:27

I found the opposite at primary. My friends Ds was always in the photographs to show diversity.

Yes it should be challenged.

Ours is similar, black, asian, and redhead boys are overrepresented on the website when in reality the school is mostly brown haired white boys.

Campervan69 · 21/11/2021 12:31

It is usually the opposite. Our school is 80% white but you'd never know that from the school website.

DameFanny · 21/11/2021 12:32

Really hard to see how this could be an oversight tbh. And if it is something like using children of governors to get quick permission, then they also need to recruit more diverse governors. Eek.

Actually I do think it’s quite important.

It’s not at all representative of the school or its location.

I’d have a word- with the governors if necessary

doodleygirl · 21/11/2021 12:42

I would definitely raise it

itsallgoingpearshaped · 21/11/2021 12:47

It needs to be addressed; please raise it with the head and governing body.

lonelyapple · 21/11/2021 13:18

Would you have written this post if the school website had only included black and Asian children and no white ones?

WorraLiberty · 21/11/2021 13:23

It is important and it's a shame that you think it isn't.

Hopefully some other parents have contacted/will contact the school about it.

Sirzy · 21/11/2021 13:27

The website should be reflective of the overall school, it shouldn’t be a massive OTT “look at us we are a diverse school” like some have said happens in their school nut it should be a natural representation

User128r7d · 21/11/2021 13:29

A friend of mine once pointed this out at her daughter's school. Wrote an email to the school to ask if it was an oversight. They were all white, blonde children and the one black boy in the photo was hidden behind another child.

The head started avoiding her and the admin staff became frosty.

She took her child out of the school for various reasons, including covert racism.

Etinoxaurus · 21/11/2021 13:32

It is important. Are they teachers kids? Often schools will push teachers kids forward for photos because their parents are to hand and give permission. Bad optics though.

MackenCheese · 21/11/2021 13:37

We're having a similar issue with DD12 school. My DD is mixed race and very sporty and quick. Yet doesn't get picked for school teams. She's aware of slower, less able white girls who all get places on the teams. The school website/newsletters are littered with photos of all white netball, hockey teams etc. I know for a fact that 50% of the school are Asian or black. Very discouraging for my DD. Sad

sloanerangerpandora · 21/11/2021 13:42

What's wrong with being white?

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 21/11/2021 13:44

That's definitely not on. Are they trying to appeal to a particular market? If so that's incredibly rascist and I wouldn't send my child there.

fiasco2021111 · 21/11/2021 13:46

@PlanktonsComputerWife

Exact opposite at our school.
I agree the same with our school too.

Watch out, there's a point sailing right over your head.

This is the same as the “all lives matter” brigade. It completely misses the point and it highlights exactly why changes are needed.
museumum · 21/11/2021 14:39

Who are the kids in the photos? Might all be siblings? And children of one member of staff or governor available for a photo shoot?
But even so they should be aware how this looks and fix it.
