To ask about Boardmasters

My nearly 17 year old just asked if he can go next year. All I know about it is that it was a hotbed of Covid this year. Do any of you have experience you could share?

My son went to Boardmasters this year - he didn't come back with covid - two of his friends tested positive and many had nasty colds. We live in Cornwall so most go to Boardmasters at some point. Let him go, he will be fine. If it is his first festival it is a good start. Not as big as Reading etc.

Absolute bloody amazing time was had by all.

Covid was spread round and round but that wasn’t so bad.

Things you should be concerned about for your son:

  1. Drink
  2. Drugs
  3. Unprotected sex
  4. Crime
. . 56. Sharks 57. Respiratory viruses

Um...

Covid is about the only thing that I didn't think about pre-Boardmasters.

My youngest went last summer, when she had just turned 17. It's 400 miles from home, so no chance of me bailing her out if it went wrong. She had a fantastic time. She rang me at some point in the middle of the night to say someone had stolen their tent and I needed to pay for a hotel. I refused, so she said that they would have to share a tent with random chavs.

I think this is what they did.

Quite.

It's a pretty normal rite of passage type festival, most people do it post GCSE so your DS isn't on the young side to go. By this summer he'll be rising eighteen, so I think trying to stop him would smack of being a bit controlling.

Wilkolampshade · 21/11/2021 20:07

Mine used to go and mates went last year. Got pissed. Came home.
A friend of theirs came back with covid I'd but will have picked it up in the pubs and clubs most probably, which they could do anywhere so 🤷‍♀️

My nephew went. He had a great time and caught COVID. Is planning on going again next year.

I haven’t been myself but I think it’s quite chill as festivals go. I used to steward festivals with Oxfam and Boardmasters usually books up with stewards pretty quickly and isn’t one of the ones known for being a bit of a nightmare. For example some people won’t steward Boomtown or Reading/Leeds but I’ve never heard of that with Boardies.

Thanks all, that’s really helpful.

I'd rather that than reading !

Its the only one I'd be happy with my teen DDs attending. It tends to attract the slightly older local surfer crowd (so a lot of responsible volunteer lifeguards) as well as the teens and has a reputation for being a lot less problematic than the likes of Reading - which I really really wouldn't want them to go to after this year.
