To think this colleague is untrustworthy

He’s the assistant manager actually, and he’s said one thing and then done the opposite a few times, kinda puts me off working there.

A few weeks ago a colleague rang in sick. He asked if I could do her evening work (was meant to finish at 5 and it would mean finishing at 9).

I couldn’t as it was too short notice as I had made plans, and told him this. He said no problem, I looked at my rota an hour later and he had put the work on there regardless.
I was really annoyed as I had family coming and had been clear I couldn’t do the work. I complained to the manager above him who took the work off my rota.

Another time, he told me how he’s a very ‘fair’ person and he wouldn’t send someone out (community job) for under an hour’s work. Then this week he sends me out for 45 minutes of work, then nothing for 3 hours.

Been told by him that he’d pay me double for overtime and then he never did.

There have been 2 people off sick this week, I’ve been given their hours. He didn’t ask if I minded doing 14-hour days several days in a row, just piled the work onto me.
I don’t mind if I am asked first, I told him twice that it’s too much for me but he didn’t seem to care.

He assured me that I would be only working 6 hours on Thursday. An hour later I looked at the rota and it had changed to 9 hours.

I just think he’s sly and doesn’t really care about the staff, plus a liar.

When I told him I didn’t want 14-hour days he basically said, well you’re off for a couple of days next week so what do you expect. I am taking annual leave that I’m perfectly entitled to.

I had to nip into the office for something and he was there, I noticed him looking me up and down when he was speaking to me which made me uncomfortable.

Does anyone else have a colleague/management like this. I have to work directly with him sometimes and once he told me ‘You’d make such a good manager one day’, I just find him false and snaky.

I'd start confirming everything in email

A paper trail is always useful

Zaplollies · 20/11/2021 20:45

That’s a good point I should do that. I don’t know why I expected him to care about me as a person, he just wants his job done.

What annoyed me too was that a colleague has been off recently with depression (which I completely understand) and he told her not to worry as he’d taken all of her work off for the next week to give her a break and put it onto others (me)

But when I ask if I can not do 14-hour shifts it’s not possible

Do you work in care? It’s probably difficult for him if someone calls in sick and there are still clients that need to be seen. If his not a confrontational person he might just put them on your rota and hope you don’t kick up a fuss - not the right way to deal with it, obviously.

But I used to work in the office of community care & hear the manager ring carer after carer after carer to cover calls and get resounding no’s every time. But YANBU.

Zaplollies · 20/11/2021 20:50

I do, and I do help them out a lot.

The day when he asked me to work the evening, I had already done extra hours that day for them.

I understand it’s hard for them to cover calls sometimes, but I think he’s a liar and false in the way he does things

Hey care worker lady! Why do you keep making multiple threads day after day about the same issues. Yet never take any advice given??

Zaplollies · 20/11/2021 21:43

Sorry I think you might be mistaking me for another poster as I haven’t posted about this topic before ?

When I worked in care services, I experienced a similar patten of behaviour from managers.
Ì left the sector altogether. I loved the work.

Endless pressure from 'management' to wedge more service-user slots into an already overwhelming rota extinguished my passion.
I often think about returning, but then I remember the almost permanent battle against traffic, service-users' extra needs being unmet or skimped and endless worry about the safety of service users after I had left.
