Toddler constipation, pharmacy?

Hi I’m so sorry I know not AIBU but I really do need some advice and I know this forum is so good for this.

My little boy doesn’t eat very healthy, we’re really trying he’s had some good stuff this week but it’s a struggle. He’s always constipated I have to give lactalose regularly. He went on Wednesday so not too long ago (he’s been longer) but for the last hour and half he’s been trying to go, straining, crying, whimpering, calling for me and his dad to hold his hand… it’s breaking my heart. I’ve given him the max dose of lactalose this morning. Is there anything else I can do for him? Could a pharmacist help?
Thank you x

I’m glad you’ve found a solution.

My daughter would suffer from constipated and on one occasion it was so bad I had to use a suppository, it worked really quickly.
The only thing that eased it for us was regular water and freshly squeezed oj.

I hope you find a permanent solution 💐

Yay, such a relief! It's so awful when they're constipated!

Did 111 phone you back?

If suppositories come out, you can also try children’s enemas, so the glicerin is in liquid form. The only problem I found with the suppositories is that they have a mild irritant to stimulate the area and make the child want to go to the toilet, but if they have any piles or small fissures from having strained in the past, then the irritant hurts.

Hi op i have a child with chronic constipation ,you really need to see the GP p as your son might need movicol , it sounds like he might frightened of having a poo and withholding ,it's a vicious circle ,have you tried sitting him on the potty / toilet and getting him some bubbles to blow? Apparently it uses the same muscles and might help him?

111 did ring back took about 4 hours but was actually better than I expected. By then I had already got the suppository and it had worked. I think going forward it sounds like movicol is the answer I will book drs on Monday, they are good here I think they will see him on the day. RE potty training I couldn’t agree more with pps saying it’s fear stopping him going, I will stop it all for now and get this problem sorted put before trying again.
He was feeling much better tonight, running about and playing. A relief to see him happy. He’s in bed now sleeping peacefully. So glad we managed to get him sorted, constipation seems like such a minor thing but he was clearly so distressed by it. Once again thank you for your stories and opinions MN has never let me down yet x
