To ask for something for us for DS’s first birthday?

PIL have asked what DS wants for his first birthday - obviously this is for us to decide on his behalf.

He has a lot of toys and since he was born the week before Christmas there are two present opportunities. I suggested a toddler carrier as he is getting restless in his pram.

Dh says no as it’s not for him but us … wondering if it’s me being unreasonable or not.

It is for him if he didn't like being in the pram! You wouldn't have one without him, just for you, for fun. I'm sure he'll love it

Mumdiva99 · 19/11/2021 18:14

Great idea. It's hardly for your benefit!

Justmuddlingalong · 19/11/2021 18:14

I think that's a perfectly reasonable request.

Shoxfordian · 19/11/2021 18:15

They’d probably rather buy him a toy than something practical

mynameiscalypso · 19/11/2021 18:17

My parents bought DS a wardrobe for his first birthday. They're buying him some bedding for Christmas. I'm all for practical presents.

purpleme12 · 19/11/2021 18:18

Mmmm I can see why some people wouldn't want to get that as a present for a one year old

Just get it yourself

LittleOwl153 · 19/11/2021 18:25

Mine have had toddler carrier back packs, push along trikes, uniforms such as guide and scout, bedding, even a car seat over the years... I too like practical presents (and I also have one with a birthday within a week of Christmas- he also has an older sibling so had alot of things passed on too!)

I think it is fine to suggest - if your PIL don't want to buy it then presumably they will say?

Leeds2 · 19/11/2021 18:40

I think it is a perfectly reasonable present request, and one of which my parents would throughly approve! However, given it is your DH's parents, I would let him have the final say over the suggestions put to PIL.

BingBongToTheMoon · 19/11/2021 18:52

They might prefer to get him a push along trike?

DoucheCanoe · 19/11/2021 18:57

Not unreasonable at all!

My eldest got a high chair for his first Christmas and a car seat for his birthday from my Mum - they got much more use than another all singing and light up thing!

SleighBells21 · 19/11/2021 19:05

I would ask for a trike

riotlady · 19/11/2021 19:15

Yes it’s for his benefit, it’s not like you’re asking for a bottle of wine!

rrhuth · 19/11/2021 19:16

I think that is fine, it isn;t for you - I thought you were going to say you had asked for a case of wine or a new carpet or something!

Wanderlust20 · 19/11/2021 19:28

That's absolutely fine! My DS will be 7 months at Xmas, I'm telling anyone that asks to give practical gifts we actually need for him! Some are fun but all are needed, better than something we don't want or won't use.
