Waters breaking?

SimplyAmy1 · 19/11/2021 09:15

Sorry, I’m mainly posting here for the amount of people that may see this but also would like to know if I’m being unreasonable.
I woke up this morning at about 3am and felt ‘wet’ but the bed wasn’t wet or anything. I went to the toilet and cleaned up and came back to bed. 6am- same thing, bed still not wet. The wetness is clear, watery and odourless.
I think maybe my waters have potentially broken so I google it 🙄 google said to put a liner in my underwear which I have. The liner is wet (been in since 7:35 ish) it’s now 9:10. Still no smell or colour to It but I constantly feel wet.
Google also said contractions mightn’t start for 12 hours til after your waters break either.

Does all of my water need to come out before labour begins? How do I know when it’s all out? I appreciate most of you probably aren’t doctors, nurses, midwives or any other medical professional but if you’ve experienced the same, that’s even better!

I have a slight belly ache and a few weird twinges. Last night I was super hungry and I don’t usually eat much but I was on a massive food purge last night so could be that!

I had a few things I needed to do today but now I’m a bit anxious to go out, just incase.

Would I be unreasonable in maybe calling the midwife to ask their opinion? I don’t particularly want to drive to the hospital and can’t really
Get There with ease anyway.

Did anyone else’s waters break like this or did they experience the ‘gush’?!

I am 37+3

Thanks in advance!

First, definitely call your midwife to get their opinion. Anything unusual is worth checking.

My waters broke when I rolled over in bed. Felt a pop then a small gush. When I was climbing out of bed, more kept coming. No pain or twinges. My contractions didn’t start until 9 hours later.

SimplyAmy1 · 19/11/2021 09:23

Thankyou @MrsLeclerc, I’ll give them a call, I just worry I’m wasting people’s time if it’s something ‘normal’! Xx

My waters trickled. I only knew it was my waters when I put a pad on and it wasn't wee.

Go to Triage to get checked out

You will never waste someone's time when it comes to hospital.
trevthecat · 19/11/2021 09:27

Oooooo exciting! Call your midwife and they will check. Mine went at 3pm with my youngest and contractions didn't start till 4am! Didn't have a big gush, just a constant trickle. Good luck

TotallySuper · 19/11/2021 09:30

How or why would you think this is wasting a midwifes time?! Of course leaking any fluids is not normal. Get on the phone. I sound harsh but I mean it nicely I promise!

Myotherface · 19/11/2021 09:31

Definitely get it checked out. You shouldn't wait too long in case it is your waters. There's a higher risk of infection if the water are trickling out and you wait for days. I stupidly did that with DS3. I'd had a bit of bleeding on and off all pregnancy and thought it was that again. Turns out it was my waters trickling out but with bits of blood. I sat on it for a few days before realising. Luckily it was all okay though.

Good luck, exciting!!

KatherineofGaunt · 19/11/2021 09:33

I had no idea my waters had gone - I had a bleed so rushed to MAU. They treated and said waters were mixed in too so I was officially in labour.

I didn't gush until I was actually having contractions the next day - 3 big gushes over the space of an hour or so, about 1-2 hours before I gave birth. The midwife said she couldn't believe there was so much! But it was because I hadn't gushed or even tricked at all really until then.

Exciting for you! Get it checked out just to be sure. I was told they would induce me if I hadn't started contractions 24 hours after the waters broke due to possibility of infection, so if your waters have broken you'll want them to be monitoring. Good luck!

TakeYourFinalPosition · 19/11/2021 09:35

Seconding to call your midwife. Mine has said trickling is normal and past 37 weeks they probably won’t want to see me, but it’s good to let them know. If/when you do go in, take a pad that you’ve used and they’ll test to check it’s waters.

Some hospitals don’t like you to go more than 24 hours after your waters have gone, so it’s good to “record” it.

Best of luck!

No the water doesn't all have to come out. My waters broke in the night, just a trickle not a deluge. I phoned the hospital and they told me to come in. I thought it was a bit pointless but turned out I was already in established labour and actually quite far gone even though, at that stage, I wasn't experiencing any pain.

Bunnycat101 · 19/11/2021 09:42

You must call. You could have PROM and they will most likely want to monitor you.

MrsLeclerc · 19/11/2021 10:02

@SimplyAmy1 They’ll never see it as a waste of time, even if it’s just something that puts your mind at ease. Hope all is well Flowers

P.S. I didn’t realise I was having contractions, just felt tiny tightening feeling if I really concentrated. I called the unit and told the midwife and she said to come in. 2 hours after my call I’d given birth!

Notdoingthis · 19/11/2021 10:02

Your waters are going which means labour has to start or there is a risk of infection. Mine started this way. The midwife has to check you and will book you for induction unless labour starts properly itself. Sounds like you may be on your way anyway. Good luck!

LUCCCY · 19/11/2021 10:03

The midwife told me that there is 2 sets of waters and only my front ones had gone. Like you, mine were only a trickle so I wasn't sure, but in fact they had gone! They sent me home and said if I wasn't in full labour within 24hrs they would induce me, which they did! Good luck OP you'll be holding your LO soon. Thanks

Harlequin1088 · 19/11/2021 10:05

Phone the bloody midwife!!

Seriously though, sounds like baby is on their way! Best of luck Thanks

pregnantorkebab · 19/11/2021 10:06

Definitely call for advice OP!

Mine went in the typical TV/movie fashion, luckily on the kitchen floor Blush and more kept coming every 5/10 mins, then every couple of minutes...I went into labour a few hours later. I was soaking through maternity pads in minutes by that point!! I was admitted immediately and monitored because I had PPROM so your treatment may vary. Best wishes Flowers

Wilkolampshade · 19/11/2021 10:11

Of course you're not wasting your midwifes time!?!? It's literally their job!

ShowOfHands · 19/11/2021 10:15

You're full term so they won't be worried about it from that point of view. And no you don't need all of your waters to go for labour to start. In fact, they replenish so in my labours (31 and 38hrs respectively) they just carried on and on and on. I felt like a fucking snail leaving a trail everywhere I went.

The midwives are actually employed to care for you so I wouldn't worry about wasting their time. It warrants checking out.

Good luck!

Stickystickystick · 19/11/2021 10:17

I'm a midwife and would say it could be waters trickling which is really normal. You may start to get some tightenings in your tummy and hopefully the contractions will ramp up and you will go in to labour. The waters will keep coming all through the labour so there will always be waters in there until the baby is born which you may notice trickling. Every hospital is different but where I work we have a number for the hospital for labour and we always like you to let us know when your waters go even if you aren't in labour. Just so we can keep an eye on how long they have gone and the colour of them etc. Call that number if you have similar to let them know. Good luck. You get to meet your baby soon!

tealandteal · 19/11/2021 10:31

Good luck to you! Definitely contact the midwife. Mine didn’t break until about 1 minute before DS was born so you definitely don’t need to have all the waters gone before labour starts.

Nsws2015 · 19/11/2021 10:43

Mine went with the biggest gush, the day before my planned csection! I woke up in the early hours thinking I had wet myself, moved quicker than I had in months and it was just pouring from me! By the time we got to the hospital my maternity pad was soaked through as were my joggers! Everytime they examined me as I was contracting they just gushed more, I kept apologising to the poor midwife 🤣 they bumped me to the top of the list for that mornings csections, I was still gushing and contracting regularly sat outside the operating theatre while they all gowned/masked up (April last year!) Felt sorry for the person having to clean up after me!!! 3 children and my waters only broke that final time, other 2 were planned csections due to breech although I was in slow labour for 5 days with the 2nd!

SimplyAmy1 · 19/11/2021 10:53

Thankyou everyone for your replies! I called the midwife who said it sounds like my waters, told me to call MAU, (I’m also high risk) and MAU said they think it sounds like my waters… so I’m waiting for my partner to come home so we can go to the hospital! Xxx

Mine went like this, but contractions never started. I was checked at the hospital, sent home and was induced two days later as a precaution against infection.

MrMrsJones · 19/11/2021 11:04

Good luck Flowers
