AIBU to think it's OK to travel now?

I have absolutely tons of annual leave to use up and am looking at places to travel to over the next month or two. A friend of mine made a really snippy comment about it not being right to travel "in the middle of a pandemic" and AIBU to think she's wrong?

I think that attitude made sense throughout 2020, and I didn't go anywhere, but we're now almost two years into the pandemic and most of us are vaccinated and there are systems and testing in place to mitigate risk. I don't think it's reasonable to expect people not to go on holiday or travel to see friends and family at this point. Covid is everywhere and it's here to stay, so I don't understand why it's acceptable to go for a long weekend in Edinburgh but not Prague or Barcelona. Provided we're prepared to take precautions like wear masks and be sensible, I don't think we can be expected to curtail our lives for much longer.

Totally agree!

I am a bit hmm at the amount of business travel that's kicking off again though. If you managed with Zooms or Teams for the last 18 months, what's the issue now?

We didn’t manage with Zoom or Teams. Not everybody works in an office job. We had to stop working because my job can’t be done over Zoom. The issue now is, we actually want some money again so we can pay our bills and put food on the table.

HTH.

Quite.
And also, in a lot of instances we 'managed' as in 'got by' but it hasn't been anywhere near as effective. We might all like to pretend that Zoom and technology can exactly replicate real life human interaction but it doesn't.

First and foremost, Find out what countries are good to go. What about poland? Then get yourself on sky scanner and look for some flights. Just take hand luggage to keep the cost down. There's lots of bargain flights to Europe at the at moment.

@ColinTheKoala

I don't have a problem with people travelling but it's too much hassle for me, with testing and forms and vaccine passports. I had a lovely trip to the Channel Islands in October.

Because simply 'managing' isn't good enough long term. "Interacting" via a computer screen simply isn't the same as face to face contact. It's OK in some contexts, but nothing can replicate actually meeting people in person.

I’m sure some meetings can be done virtually. DH doesn’t travel internationally but used to go to many meetings in this country. Still mainly WFH but does now do some meetings in person but not all of them. Some have had to go virtual anyway due to a participant having had COVID.

Went to Whitby for a week, last week. Started with Covid on Tuesday. 7 day incubation period.

And you know you caught it in Whitby, how?

(Or have I misunderstood your post?)

My job is “business as usual” - it definitely doesn’t feel like it’s a pandemic in my daily life. No safety measures whatsoever. So my leisure time is the same. That includes holidays.

dabbydeedoo · 19/11/2021 18:58

@Mummylovesmonkeys I heard the incubation period for Delta tends to be much shorter - just a few days and not seven, so potentially you didn't get it in Whitby but it's everywhere in the UK anyway :(
