AIBU to tie a knot at the end of the thread when repairing clothes?

I know this is the most first world problem ever, but I was just thinking about this while repairing something.

Whenever I do things like sewing on a button or sewing part of a seam that's come undone, I always tie a knot at the end of my thread and then start sewing.

However, I remember people from my childhood who always said you should never tie a knot, and that the "proper" way to do things was to make a couple of repeat stitches on top of each other so that it holds. I remember when we did embroidery at school with that binca stuff, there were at least two people who were horrified that I tied a knot to start.

Well, sod those people. I'll tie a knot if I fucking want to.

Up to you! Like you say, the proper way is to sew a couple of securing stitches but if the knot works better for you, do that.

JadeTrinket · 17/11/2021 23:24

Yes, our sewing nun told us it was uncouth too. But then Joanne McCarthy sewed right through her thumb with the sewing machine and was carted off gushing blood, so I’ve just gone on tying knots if I feel like it. Joanne was a ringing bitch as twelve year olds go, and everyone hoped she got gangrene.

DirtyDancing · 17/11/2021 23:24

Never occurred to me not to do a knot!

DeepaBeesKit · 17/11/2021 23:24

I do this too OP. I've tried the thing doing a couple of stitches and it does not hold.

Redshoeblueshoe · 17/11/2021 23:24

Tie a knot. The last thing you want is to finish repairing it, then for the threads to come loose

onepieceoflollipop · 17/11/2021 23:24

Aren’t the couple of repeat stitches in effect a knot anyway - but tied with the needle flat against the fabric?
I tie a knot as well, in fact I tie two, one on top of the other! As often a single one pulls through my fabric.

DeepaBeesKit · 17/11/2021 23:25

Jade your whole post just gave me proper giggles.

DramaAlpaca · 17/11/2021 23:25

I don't think it matters. I'm a fellow unashamed thread knotter Smile

@SequinnedShawl Who decides what is the proper way, and how did they get voted in charge?

@JadeTrinket And why was it considered uncouth? I definitely remember someone being quite horrified by it. I just don't get why it's so controversial. Or is it just one of those social rules that developed just because it did?

I feel like a real rebel now. Grin

Jade I'm crying here Grin

For embroidery I’d do it “properly” with the repeat stitches, otherwise it bunches the fabric a bit. But buttons, seams etc i knot. It’s being worn, I need it secure!

A double knot, basically.

I sometimes tie a triple knot, just to be on the ultra-safe side.

Do what works! I put both ends of the thread through the needle, so instead of a knot there’s a loop at the end. As I put the first stitch in I don’t pull the loop end through but I then put the needle through it and then tighten to secure as I pull the remaining thread through.

WhenDoesTheWashingEnd · 17/11/2021 23:29

I sew for a living these days.

Tying a knot just feels wierd to me so I wouldn't do it. But if the thing you sew stays together and it all looks tidy do what works.

So long as the thread is anchored at the beginning it's all good.

Mojoj · 17/11/2021 23:30

@JadeTrinket still howling😂😂😂😂

OctoberNovemberDecember · 17/11/2021 23:32

I just don't understand why certain people are so shocked and horrified by it. Fuck the system! Grin

Jade you just nearly killed me. I'm ill with a chest infection, just had a coughing fit that I could barely stop after snorting at your postGrin

@JadeTrinket it was not me that was a bitch, it was you, you were a total cow and my thumb fell off hope you’re happy now
stitchy · 17/11/2021 23:34

I sew for a living and use a knot all the time - along with some anchoring stitches for a belt and braces approach - I always make sure the knot is hidden though so still neat

DontPeeInThePlayHouse · 17/11/2021 23:38

I was taught by my oma when little. I have no idea what it's called but you put your needle part way through the fabric, wrap the thread a few times around the needle then pull up for a knot. It's how I've always finished anything.

Emilizz34 · 17/11/2021 23:38

I remember being taught at school that you only use a knot when using tacking stitches .
However I do a lot of sewing and always use a knot for convenience

Downsize2021 · 17/11/2021 23:38

Don't get me started on weaving ends in when you're changing colour in crochet! I always tie a wee knot. Screw you complainers!

Fruitbatdancer · 17/11/2021 23:41

We’ll after I sewed the same fucking beaver badge 3 times as I’m an incompetent sewer who made the fler de lise thingy wonky 3 times, I ranted to a friend who said and I quote “oh I just superglued DS’s on” ShockShockShock
I mean OP, if people are shocked at you rebellious knot they’ll be weeping in the street at bloody superglue!! #whathastheworldbecome

TimeForTeaAndG · 17/11/2021 23:48

If I'm sewih buttons etc I tend to use doubled thread and tie the ends together. Am I balls going to try and catch the threads. If I'm properly sewing like cross stitch or embroidery I'll make it pretty.

I'm glad I've got some solidarity here!
