Son being sick at the same time every night

For the past 4 days…fine all day, it gets to dinner time and he starts looking pale and a bit off…says he feels sick, then after picking at his dinner, he throws up , usually a huge amount, most of what he’s eaten in the day Sad
I’m going to call the GP tomorrow, but wondering if anyone has been through the same.
No temp, slight snotty nose, not out of sorts particularly, still running around and wanting to play, alert and doing what he normally does.

He’s 3 years old, if that helps.

The obvious question here is is he eating something at dinner time that he doesn't have during the rest of the day? Something that he might be allergic or intolerant to?

Redbusyellowbus · 17/11/2021 22:02

@APerfectSky no, it’s normally something different each time, he usually starts acting nauseous before dinner as well.

Could it just not be a vomity bug that hasn’t resolved, like he needs to just not eat or eat very little for a day or two to give his body a rest? I think if he was nauseous before dinner I’d be encouraging him not to eat. But definitely worth checking with Gp.

Kath85 · 17/11/2021 22:05

I’m in a similar position as my DS has been sick the last 2 mornings and then been quite alert and playing etc the rest of the day. He also has snotty nose and no temperature so I’m thinking just a strange bug his body is trying to shift. Sorry I can’t offer any advice but hopefully he will be better soon!

TotallySuper · 17/11/2021 22:11

Covid covid covid. This is how it presents in young kids please do a test even just to rule it out. Put him on dry carbs and water for a few days too.

CatNamedEaster · 17/11/2021 22:16

Sounds like a bug and it's not specifically dinner that's causing the vomiting but maybe a build up of food during the day that the tummy isn't ready to cope with.

Dial it back a bit on portion and blandness: half a weetabix or half a piece of toast and only when he complains of hunger, then hopefully it will give the stomach time to heal before building food back up.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 17/11/2021 22:17

There is a really odd virus going round. My DS is also 3 and on Friday and Saturday evenings he picked at his dinner. He also had 2 really late naps. He wasn't sick but woke up at night, quite upset, 3 hours after going to sleep. No temp, slightly runny nose. He reacted quite badly to what seemed mild - ended up in hospital with viral wheeze on Saturday night.

(It's not covid, he was tested in hospital).

BabyPotato · 17/11/2021 22:18

I must admit my first thought was Covid too, but that's probably because absolutely loads of kids I know currently have it and a lot of them are sick quite randomly too. Obviously it could be any other bug too. Hope your DS feels better soon!

Needsleep32 · 17/11/2021 22:21

I had similar with my 2yo recently - was pretty much ok all day, but about an hour after her bedtime would wake up vomiting. GP said it was gastro, she was better after about 4 days.

Needsleep32 · 17/11/2021 22:22

BRAT diet helped!

saywhatwhatnow · 17/11/2021 22:31

Ds had similar last week. Vomited Sunday evening, Monday evening and Wednesday evening, all post dinner/in the night. He had no other symptoms apart from a slight cold (not covid). Kept him on the BRAT diet as much as possible, especially no dairy. My other DC vomited on the Tuesday evening (just to keep us on our toes) but he was fine after that so I do think it was just a weird bug that made their tummies a bit sensitive.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 17/11/2021 22:36

I’d get a pcr test for him, but there are a lot of odd viruses around at the moment, both my kids have had strange throw up a few times, or tummy pains at random times. DC1 currently is positive for covid and the only symptom is strange tummy pains

Redbusyellowbus · 17/11/2021 23:25

Thanks for all the replies, helps to know I’m not alone in this! Keep thinking the worst (I know, I need to stop googling his symptoms!)

I’ll try and do a covid test on him, but I can’t imagine he’ll allow anything up his nose or down his throat, but can try.

I’ve seen a lot of Covid in children as I work in a school. Very few of them have had vomiting. OP, can you feel his glands in his neck and groin? He could have an infection. Or, he may well be overeating throughout the day (Amy grandson sneaks food out of the fridge at the first opportunity!). Is he pooing regularly? He could be constipated or there could be a blockage that’s slowing down his digestive transit.
Redbusyellowbus · 17/11/2021 23:31

@Soontobe60 I wondered about the blockage thing…he has had a poo today , well two actually, but the second one was more runny and less of it, the first one was quite a lot, but not a great consistency.
I haven’t felt his glands, I will do in the morning.

Redbusyellowbus · 17/11/2021 23:32

What would the signs of a blockage be? Except the vomiting I mean.

SuperDuperC · 17/11/2021 23:37

Hi, might be an idea to get his urine tested. My son had this when he was younger, lasted for weeks until a locum (?) dr checked urine he had a urine infection which can cause vomiting apparently. Good luck, I know how stressful it is

Redbusyellowbus · 17/11/2021 23:39

@SuperDuperC oh really?
Was he randomly being sick, but at the same or similar time each day too?
If I call up about him vomiting, should I mention urine infection then? Seems like they wouldn’t link the two, but I want to get to the bottom of it!

OP posts:
SuperDuperC · 17/11/2021 23:43

Well that's what caught my eye on your post, the time thing. Yep, he was sick at the same time every evening, didn't matter what he had eaten, had no other symptoms either. It was very very strange and I'll be forever grateful that my usual doctor was away (she kept fobbing me off!) otherwise we'd have never seen this very kind locum who wanted to check everything including urine

ohnana · 18/11/2021 00:02

OP have a look at Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome - typically happens same time each day and is most common in kids between 3-7. Just incase worth looking into more detail.

ohnana · 18/11/2021 00:03

Sorry not each day, but each episode. But can run for a number of days and same pattern.

Avarua · 18/11/2021 00:06

Get urine checked.

Hercisback · 18/11/2021 00:27

My two kids are doing very similar OP. Their sickness is usually 11.30pm but both of them the same time every night. I tried the BRAT diet on one and it worked for a day so I'm putting them both on that for two days. I'm so fed up with washing.

BoredOfCbeebies · 18/11/2021 01:29

Same weird bug here too! DD 4 been sick once Sunday evening, Monday evening and Wednesday night, with a couple of diarrhoea episodes dotted about. Feels fine the rest of the time. Lots of her school mates had a tummy bug last week, but only lasted a day or two - we seem to have the drawn out version!
