Can this happen when buying a house or is ex bullshitting?

Ex is supposedly buying a house outright with an inheritance. He put the offer in in June and there is only him and the owner in the chain. Of course he had to wait for probate, but that is done. He told the dc he expected to get the keys last Tuesday. Then he said it would be Thursday. He has them every Thursday and eow they stay through to Sunday (in theory - when it happens). It got to last Thursday and he told the dc the estate agents'/sol's app was down so he still couldn't get in. Now he has just messaged to say it's still 'down' so he won't be having the dc this weekend either. Afaik, he still has his rental but everything is packed up.

Leaving aside the pain in my arse this is, is it feasible that this app has been down for well over a week, preventing him from completing? I've bought a house twice before and I know it can be a nightmare, but it's a small chain with a cash buyer... I'm beginning to smell a rat...

He is potentially right.

There was a big cyber attack on a large conveyancing firm last week and there are thousands of people unable to exchange or complete - including us!

An “app” wouldn’t stop a sale completing - once contracts are exchanged and a completion date is set the funds are transferred by the bank into the solicitor’s client account and buyer can get keys. No app involved.

But it seems a weird and pointless thing to lie about, especially if he’s packed up his current house. What would he gain by pretending he’d bought a house and then having to make up excuses why he couldn’t move in for the rest of eternity?

shouldistop · 17/11/2021 21:48

I don't know. For some reason I read house as horse and when you said he expected to get the keys I had to double check Grin

Giving you a bump.

Cross post with Wowzel if systems are down then yes, that could delay funds transferring / completions.

Strangevipers · 17/11/2021 21:51

Totally Plausible

However if you know which estate agents / solicitors he's using call and ask them if there app is down

On the other hand won't he need some time to set things up in the new house for the kids - clean especially with Covid, set up beds etc. Just a thought

Ah, thanks for the info Wowzer and sorry you're in that situation. Well, maybe he's telling the truth then- I've just learnt to doubt him. No idea why he would lie but he is a massive fuck up and would maybe mess up the transaction in some way or pull out because buying a house is actually a bit on the sensible side for him and would stop him pissing the money up the wall, which would be his preference. Then he might put off coming clean. Looks like I've been paranoid though and it may be true... I wonder how long it's going to be - looks like a serious issue.

My exh's car burnt out in a garage. Turned out not to be insured!!
He told the dc for months and months he was picking up the new car 'tomorrow'..
10 years later he is still driving his late df's car..
Smell bs from here op.

I think some people have managed to exchange and complete today from the solicitors listed on that link, but not many. The app he is referring to may be "E way" which apparently contains loads of the data needed for progress the sale

Think we will end up moving into my in laws as have to exchange and complete within the next 10 days - argh!
