To ask if you've ever radically changed your mind about something (lighthearted!)

I'm thinking both of serious matters (politics, religion etc) and perhaps less serious ones (food preferences, music genres, colours, hobbies). I'm interested in how or why people change their minds about things, whether suddenly or over a long period.

Politics (and religion, I suppose) can be very tribal and sometimes depend more on what we've been brought up to believe rather than the empirical evidence - but have you had a 'conversion' to the other side in some way?

I have a trivial example to do with food. I was at primary school so long ago that they frequently made you sit until you''d finished whatever was on your plate. I remember at the time that chocolate semolina (oh yes!) made me heave, and although I was generally greedy and not very fussy, I just couldn't get it down. I sat there looking at it and knew I'd have to just do it, so started to shovel it in. By the 4th spoonful I was totally converted and after that, I couldn't get enough - even asked my mum to make it at home. This is really weird, I think, and counter-intuitive, but I've never forgotten it! (Not recommending this as an approach now, though!).

Any experiences like this, either major or minor?

Some interesting mind changes! I too became more small c conservative as I got older, had a family etc.

I was raised in an atheist household and until fairly recently was confident in that. Now I believe in God.

Bloodybridget · 17/11/2021 21:25

I went from 37 years of vegetarianism to an enthusiastic omnivore. I also thought women I knew who were critical of trans rights activists, a few years ago, were out of order - I've completely changed my mind about that!

Cherryana · 17/11/2021 21:46

Assisted suicide - went from anti to pro

Eating - I was able to eat only whole foods all summer, drink water all day and exercise and now I can't stop eating any processed crap I can find. My summer self would have been horrified at the cauliflower cheese/yorkshire pudding dinner tonight!

gah2teenagers · 17/11/2021 21:46

Used to think that teachers shouldn’t be higher up in the vaccine Q. Changed my mind now GDS school closed again 18 months on with 10 double vaccinated teachers off with covid. Get ya boasters people.

CatsArePeople · 18/11/2021 12:13

Motorcycles. Used to want one in my youth. Till i finally got one. Way more hard work and expense than fun.
OH has one - that's quite enough for me.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 18/11/2021 12:21

Changed my mind about -
BBC licence Fee - was vey pro, no very anti
Brexit (very pro EU in late 90s, changed mind around 2010)
Green party support - actually they moved away from me.
Almost al foods - everything I hated as a kid I now love - a late convert to Goats cheese.

TonyThreePies · 18/11/2021 12:52

My choice of husband.

Sayke · 18/11/2021 13:10

I was a lifelong Labour voter but their stance on women's rights means I no longer want to vote for them.

I'm horrified that the Tories now don't seem so bad but I would still never vote for them.

It's unsettling to be politically homeless.

I used to be anti hunting but now think it's better than factory farming.

Trophy and fox hunting - anything done for sport not food - still think that is immoral.

OhGiveUp · 18/11/2021 14:39

Vegetables.. I hated them.
As an adult I love them.
Except turnip and swede. You can keep them thanks.

Global warming/climate change - used to be quite worried and environmentally conscious. Now i'm convinced it's a global scale hoax.

Theywalkamongstus · 21/11/2021 07:36

@CatsArePeople

Global warming/climate change - used to be quite worried and environmentally conscious. Now i'm convinced it's a global scale hoax.
Why though? What would be the purpose of such a hoax and why would so many well respected, authentic scientists participate in such a hoax?
DaphneBlake101 · 21/11/2021 08:37

Stacey Dooley - I used to have an irrational and completely inexplicable dislike for her. I was forced to watch her during the period where there wasn't a documentary produced by the BBC that she didn't present and now I absolutely adore her, follow her on Instagram, read her book and actively watch everything she's on.

MsIreneWinters · 21/11/2021 08:39

Bake Off on channel 4. Was never interested in watching it after the move from BBC. Am now absolutely hooked on this series (go Chigs!)

WinterFirTree · 21/11/2021 08:45

Avocadoes- used to hate them. Then went to a wedding which had teeny tiny portions and I was starving. So I ate the avocado. Love it now!

More seriously- DH's best friend. I used to think he was eccentric but harmless. Known him for 20 years, and finally realised what others had been telling me - he is entitled, nasty and a terrible user. I had turned a blind eye to the fact that we were always doing things for him and favours for him, but assumed if the tables were turned he would do the same for us. I found out that not only am I wrong, but that the 'friends'; he had asked us to put up over several years in our home were actually paying him B&B rates, wheras we thought we were just being generous to him to help his other friends out. Long story, but that is actually just the tip of the iceberg to what I discovered this year. (A mutual friend coud finally stand it no more and told us).

OldTinHat · 21/11/2021 09:00

Marriage. I was brought up to expect I would marry for life and raise children (despite my father having affair after affair but that was apparently okay). Married twice (divorced first one after discovering affairs when I was pregnant and miscarried late due to the stress), had children from the second, divorced alwhen they were toddlers and their father refused to ever see them again. Single ever since (I was 32 and now I'm 50). Life is much better alone and there is absolutely no requirement to have a partner to be happy.

montysma1 · 21/11/2021 09:07

Smartphones.
Couldnt see the point of internet on small sceens and said they would never catch on.

TheGoogleMum · 21/11/2021 09:46

Labour - I was so pro I became a member but left and am not sure I could vote for them now. I doubt I'd vote Conservative either though
Abortion- as a teenager I didn't understand how anyone could do this but now I believe nobody should tell women what to do with their bodies

RantyAunty · 21/11/2021 09:56

Anchovies
Went from disgusting to delicious

Marriage
very overrated

RaRaReba · 21/11/2021 09:58

I was brought up to be religious. But when I grew up and got an education I realised religion wasn’t logical and had no basis in scientific fact. So now I’m an atheist.

PhilCornwall1 · 21/11/2021 10:34

A sour raspberry real ale I had yesterday. First mouthful and I said "this is bloody awful!!".

After a pint, I really changed my mind.

SusieBob · 21/11/2021 10:38

Having read through some of the Narnia books with my son, I've gone from loving them as a kid to realising they are actually fucking awful.

Awfully written and full of classism and racism. They deserve to be filled along with the golliwogs.

BubbleCoffee · 21/11/2021 11:25

I couldn't stand bacon and am now partial to the occasional bacon sarnie.

I reckon you're Ed Miliband Grin

Heruka · 21/11/2021 11:28

Amazed by people saying there’s nothing major - for me there are so many, I’d be here all day!!
