Spoke to GP receptionist about 18 month old who sounds chesty and generally under the weather. Said I would like to see GP so they can listen to their chest and see if it needs antibiotics. Was told the duty doctor would call me. After 2 mins I get a text to say that a prescription for antibiotics has been sent to nominated pharmacy!

Thats not OK. I would phone back and say I want her chest listened to because I don't want to give her antibiotics needlessly. You dont even need a GP a nurse would do.

Aren't Drs supposed to be a lot more sparing with antibiotics these days?
I wouldn't take anything like that unless I've actually been seen face-to-face.

Thank you for your replies! I was actually shocked and then started to doubt myself… is this how it works nowadays and are they actually being efficient?! But I don’t want to give antibiotics needlessly! Back in the queue to reception, caller number 9 in the queue…

Yeah that’s not ok. You generally don’t get antibiotics for a chesty cough as they tend to be viral. My son has had a chesty cough for months (and been examined by doctor) and they’ve told me this a couple of times.
I also definitely wouldn’t want to be giving medication unnecessarily.
Call back and asked to be seen.

Receptionist was as shocked as I was! They have asked for a GP to call me!

That's dreadful! No wonder there's an antibiotics crisis!
