Would you live in a house where there had been a murder?

Just that really… DP and I looking at buying a second property to rent out. It’s underpriced and chain free… because 18 months ago the husband murdered his wife in one of the bedrooms. It’s put me off a good amount but DP is still keen to go ahead with the sale and says there will be lots of people that won’t want t rent it but it won’t put EVERYONE off. Would it put you off?

You’ll struggle to resell, I missed out on my dream house because the owner hung himself in the property. I just couldn’t get over the sadness feeling.

52andblue · 16/11/2021 09:49

@swimminginmud I am so very sorry for your loss of your sister Flowers

monotonousmum · 16/11/2021 09:50

If you're buying it cheap you could hopefully afford to market it just under market value rent for a while, someone will need it. And then the association will fade over time.

twilightermummy · 16/11/2021 09:50

It would bother me. I lived in a house with really bad vibes before. Not only do I believe it was haunted but I was a mess and bad things kept happening to me in my personal life.

bozzabollix · 16/11/2021 09:50

It’d put me off. The sadness of knowing someone had their life ended prematurely in a horrible way would make living there horrible. And I'm not bothered about deaths in houses at all, that’s a natural passing just like birth. Violence is something else.

Angel2702 · 16/11/2021 09:55

Wouldn’t put me off at all. As sad as it is it isn’t anything g to do with the building.

Peace43 · 16/11/2021 09:56

Wouldn't bother me!

AutumnAnn · 16/11/2021 09:56

Wouldn't bother me at all

Saracen · 16/11/2021 09:59

No, I wouldn't care..

ABCDEF1234 · 16/11/2021 10:00

Someone bought the property near me in which a man killed his partner - it still amazes me someone bought it but it shows that some people won't be put off

Doubledoorsontogarden · 16/11/2021 10:00

I think it depends on how rental market is in that location, I think I had a room in a house in London years where there had been a murder on the front door step, it was either our house or adjoining one. Tbh didn’t bother me

JudgeJ · 16/11/2021 10:01

My house dates back to around 1850, goodness knows what's happened in that time, I'm sure that many oler houses have a history.

Greenmarmalade · 16/11/2021 10:09

I wouldn’t live there. I wouldn’t even go in.

rampitup · 16/11/2021 10:11

Yes but I would smudge it.

LaBellina · 16/11/2021 10:14

I would be hesitant to buy it. If it were my dream house and it was VERY underpriced, I might consider it. But I would do multiple viewings first I think to get a good sense of the atmosphere.

TheVanguardSix · 16/11/2021 10:15

You'd have to sage the hell out of that mother fucker, OP.
Nope. I wouldn't touch it. Not because of the creepiness but just bad juju.

I’m afraid even white sage wouldn’t help in this case or it might be just temporary…..
Dazedandc0nfused · 16/11/2021 10:17

It wouldn't bother me.

MarineBlue33 · 16/11/2021 10:18

I know of a flat in Central London which if you Google the address, you would read about the murder that took place over 130 years ago. It wouldn't sell for over a year (in an area where properties sold quickly). I can't remember the exact flat no otherwise would do another search.
OP, you really need to know what you are doing with this one. There will be an atmosphere for sure. I am a spiritual person and would get a vicar (need to find the right one) to do an exorcism. I can explain more by pm if you want.
I know others don't have this belief but this is mine.

Tinacollada · 16/11/2021 10:18

Being pragmatic, if you're going to be looking at having tenants they are far less likely to look up the history of the property, it's not their investment...

I would consider the market in the area first and foremost.

Go with what you feel OP, good luck!

This is good advice if you indeed decide to buy, there are official vicars appointed by the church to perform this kind of ‘ house cleaning’.
LindaEllen · 16/11/2021 10:20

@SallyCinnamon3009

Just be aware if you come to sell it I think legally you're required to to tell the person buying it what happened there
Bollocks.
LaBellina · 16/11/2021 10:20

Perform exorcisms I mean, this might be a part of their job

StucklnAMuumuuCantGetOutOflt · 16/11/2021 10:22

As a purchaser, I would not care - would be happy with the good price, especially if buying as a 'forever home.'
As a tenant, how would I know? If I did know, I might try to haggle over rental price but tbh if reasonable and fit my needs, would rent it out as have always found decent places and decent landlords in short supply.

thedefinitionofmadness · 16/11/2021 10:22

It would very much bother me if in its recent history.
