Would you live in a house where there had been a murder?

Just that really… DP and I looking at buying a second property to rent out. It’s underpriced and chain free… because 18 months ago the husband murdered his wife in one of the bedrooms. It’s put me off a good amount but DP is still keen to go ahead with the sale and says there will be lots of people that won’t want t rent it but it won’t put EVERYONE off. Would it put you off?

I should add that it’s not being advertised that’s the past of the house, I only know as I’m a local resident and heard about it in the news. As I’m sure many others did too… plus neighbours that still live there etc may tell prospective tenants if they don’t already know themselves

It wouldn’t put me off. I think the association will fade over time.

Idolovetrees · 16/11/2021 07:19

Yes it would put me off sorry

blackcatclub · 16/11/2021 07:21

I’d use it to get money off the asking price tbh

WeatherwaxLives · 16/11/2021 07:22

It would only put me off if it was a high profile case and likely to get ghouls coming to 'see' the house. The murder itself wouldn't worry me.

Porcupineintherough · 16/11/2021 07:22

Yes it would rule it out for me.

1988TBT · 16/11/2021 07:22

It’s already about 50-60k under market value. Abs not high profile in that way

I couldn’t live there

Benchbenchbench · 16/11/2021 07:23

Yes I wouldn’t even consider it I’m afraid

ToykotoLosAngeles · 16/11/2021 07:24

Financially it makes sense but I'd probably end up having awful dreams about it, even if not living there.

CatonMat · 16/11/2021 07:26

I wouldn't want to live there.

statetrooperstacey · 16/11/2021 07:26

I wouldn’t care at all.

stonebrambleboy · 16/11/2021 07:28

I'd buy it redecorate and ask the local priest to bless the house.

MintyCedric · 16/11/2021 07:29

I wouldn't personally but I agree with your DH that there are plenty of people who won't be bothered.

If it's a good bet in other ways you only have to get someone unbothered or from outside the area who isn't aware of it's past and you're good to go.

Can you afford for it to be empty for a while or to reduce the letting price slightly of needs be

Amdone123 · 16/11/2021 07:30

It wouldn't bother me.

Voord · 16/11/2021 07:31

It wouldn’t bother me personally but I can see how it would put some people off.

1988TBT · 16/11/2021 07:31

Yes we can afford to sit on it for 6 months I reckon. new bathrooms and kitchen and redecorated throughout and recarpet is the plan

OP posts:
Volterra · 16/11/2021 07:31

It would put me off.

AlistairCamel · 16/11/2021 07:31

There’s a real shortage of rental stock at the moment and the association will fade with time

Enko · 16/11/2021 07:32

It would not bother me

RestingStitchFace · 16/11/2021 07:33

That would be a no for me...

SallyCinnamon3009 · 16/11/2021 07:33

Just be aware if you come to sell it I think legally you're required to to tell the person buying it what happened there

OhGiveUp · 16/11/2021 07:33

I bought and still live in a house where a husband had murdered his wife in what is now my bedroom.
I got it for a good price.

DiamondBright · 16/11/2021 07:34

It wouldn't bother me, unless I knew the deceased, if it was a complete stranger it wouldn't put me off.
