To think learning how to behave around dogs should be part of the national curriculum

I think schools should teach children how to behave around dogs, canine body language and so on. I think it would significantly reduce the number of children that end up in A&E each year due to dogs bites. I’ve seen some dreadful behaviour in my local park where children will run up to my dog and one child was continually trying to bear hug her own dog. Children clearly aren’t being taught this at home so I think they should include it in schools. I welcome your thoughts on this.

Do you really think it's ok for a child to chase a dog?! Law or no law?

Where did i say that?

I am simply pointing out that legally, your dog has few rights compared to a child, and that while you as an individual value your dog highly, society values children far more and therefore the burden is on you as a dog owner to protect childrem from your dog, not vice versa.

I know my dog would not bite a child. But I still don't think it's fair for her to be tormented or chased by badly behaved children.
My own children have been taught how to respect animals. It's not that difficult to do.

And why do you think it has to be the responsibility of just the dog owner?
Why can't parents have responsibility for teaching their children to respect animals and dog owners have responsibility for keeping their dogs away from children? Then everyone is happy!

Kitkatfiend31 · 01/01/2023 16:23

If dog owners have their dogs on short leads and in their control then there won't be a problem. Personally I would ban stretchy leads that people use but can't control their dog/call them back.

HelpMeGetThrough · 01/01/2023 16:33

What a valuable life skill. Not.

MarysGirlChildWasLate4ChristmasDay · 01/01/2023 16:47

You know, dog owners are so fucking entitled and I've had just about enough of them bowling my toddler over whilst they shout that it's friendly while my child cowers, at this stage I'd support kicking your fucking dog in the face of they approach my child off the lead classes.

Does not apply to responsible owners so no need to get upset. Control your fucking dog FFS.

I just don't get how people have this mindset but cant see that it's the same thing when children run up to/mishandle a dog that is minding its own business.
I totally agree that no dog should be doing that to your toddler. Just as I know that no child should be doing that to my dog.

My child wouldn't. At the end of the day of you have an animal capable of killing my child you need to keep it under control.

Blame the mindset on your fellow cunt dog owners.

Let's just agree that it would be better if the dog and child were under control.

MarysGirlChildWasLate4ChristmasDay · 01/01/2023 17:11

Nope sorry your dog is not a fucking person.
Get over it.
Train your fucking dog.
Stop leaving shit everywhere.
Stay out of kids playparks and beaches.
Job done.

MarysGirlChildWasLate4ChristmasDay · 01/01/2023 17:12

I'll agree that the owners need a kick in the face really but sadly that's frowned upon.

My dog is trained. No shit is left anywhere. I never go in kids playparks with her.
Thanks for the advice though 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄

Sorry that's not anything I said I agreed with! It doesn't sound like we are going to agree on this one at all!

Well if your dog is trained and you keep it on a lead and don't let it shit everywhere there's no fucking problem is there.
Sure it is though. Bet you are one of these "he's friendly cunts".

The problems is the entitled parents who think they can let their darlings run up to her, pull her tail, grab at her and bother her when she's minding her own business.
If caring about the welfare of animals makes me a cunt, so be it!

MarysGirlChildWasLate4ChristmasDay · 01/01/2023 17:17

Funny how ninety percent of dog owners in real.life are absolute cunts, but online they are model owners.

Ponderingwindow · 01/01/2023 17:20

It is never a child’s fault if they are attacked. 100% the dog owner. The owner should always have control over a pet.

if a child approaches your dog, take control of the situation and teach the child. Tell the child to stop. If you need them to leave, tell them to leave. It an interaction is possible, walk them through asking permission to approach. If a pet is allowed, make sure they ask permission, then show the child how your dog likes to be pet.

😂 not sure why you hate me so much! But whatever. Let agree to disagree

MarysGirlChildWasLate4ChristmasDay · 01/01/2023 17:35

Yes you care about animals so much you are happy to feed your mutt the corpses of thousands of mistreated farm animals every day. As long as it's cheap eh?

Or is it dogs you care about. Because they give you pleasure and fuck an animals right to life or freedom.

I've literally never seen a toddler apraoch a dog. Always the other way round. But regardless its your fucking responsibility.

Your dog is not people. Get over it.

AGoodDayForSomebodyElseToDie · 01/01/2023 17:36

Given that some parents are fucking idiots, and some dog owners are fucking idiots, it would be a good idea for someone to teach the kids of the fucking idiot parents not to throw themselves on top of dogs and start hanging off their faces, whether at home with their own pet, or in the park with a strange one.

This is something that the Dogs Trust do, in schools and with youth groups. It can't reasonably be foisted onto teaching staff.

I bloody despair at the "cute" videos that go around SM of distressed dogs being sat on / pulled about / bear hugged by kids while their parent looks on lovingly and says how cute they are and how much the dog loves his kid. Idiots the lot of them.

Crabwoman · 01/01/2023 17:40

My mum did that, when we were out and about as kids. Fairly simple conversations if I recall. Did the same with my kids.

YABU.

Biscuit

It is not a child's fault if a dog attacks them.

Owners need to take more responsibility - including not buying bloody dogs in the first place if they are not going to a) train them and b) use a lead.

It is not schools' job to put right every problem in society.

I beg to disagree. It is sometimes the human’s fault. Some dogs don’t like being poked in the eye or asshole. (Yes it happens).
They don’t like going hugged on hot days.

People are stupid. MN hates dogs OP. They also hate cats.
