To think learning how to behave around dogs should be part of the national curriculum

I think schools should teach children how to behave around dogs, canine body language and so on. I think it would significantly reduce the number of children that end up in A&E each year due to dogs bites. I’ve seen some dreadful behaviour in my local park where children will run up to my dog and one child was continually trying to bear hug her own dog. Children clearly aren’t being taught this at home so I think they should include it in schools. I welcome your thoughts on this.

I don’t think it should be the responsibility of schools.

Ha ha ha

Hippywannabe · 15/11/2021 22:01

How about parents do it?

OnlyYellowRoses · 15/11/2021 22:01

No. That should be down to the parents/guardians to teach. It's not down to schools to teach life skills, that's the parents part.

mumof2oneofeach · 15/11/2021 22:02

My dog loves a bear hug!

It is not a child's fault if a dog attacks them.

Owners need to take more responsibility - including not buying bloody dogs in the first place if they are not going to a) train them and b) use a lead.

It is not schools' job to put right every problem in society.

Cyberworrier · 15/11/2021 22:02

We had a dogs trust visit at a school I worked at and I found it very educational- and I'm an adult, brought up with dogs etc. I do think it would be useful but I can also see schools have limited budgets and resources etc so its an awkward one. So many children have no knowledge of animals and it's good for them to get some understanding in school, if possible.

SouthsideSally · 15/11/2021 22:02

Yeah because schools don't have enough to do. 🙄

VestaTilley · 15/11/2021 22:02

YABU. Is this a parody?

Schools can’t teach everything. Believe it or not some things are a parents job. If schools taught everything people on the internet say they should then the school week would be 100 hours long.

Anyway, it probably does get mentioned in classes where news items are being discussed, in PHSE and Social Care etc.

The problem is idiots keeping banned and dangerous breeds, not training dogs properly, allowing dogs off the lead where they shouldn’t be, under exercising their dogs and keeping them in tiny properties.

Of course some children behave stupidly around dogs - but that’s not what’s causing deaths by dangerous dogs. That’s the dogs and their moronic owners.

@BigYellowHat

I don’t think it should be the responsibility of schools.
Well I don't have a dog. My kids know not to touch one unless the owner says it's okay, never pull on it, if it looks grumpy step away, I'll never leave them alone with one, etc. BUT who is going to teach some dogs that not every child wants it to come up without a lead?? It's not school's responsibility.
Brightbluebell · 15/11/2021 22:03

That is absolutely the job of a parent.

Glinsk · 15/11/2021 22:04

Seriously? It's the child's fault if a dog bites itHmm.

Patapouf · 15/11/2021 22:04

Hilarious!

It's not a child's responsibility to behave a certain way around a dog. It's the dog owners responsibility to keep everyone safe by training their mutt.

I'd sooner ban all dog ownership than add to the burden on teachers to deliver the existing national curriculum.

CustardCreamsAndMintTea · 15/11/2021 22:04

Sometimes I think some people want to hand over their babies at birth, and have them returned when they have been taught EVERYTHING.
Schools aren't responsible for everything; its nice to teach your own kids stuff, and also fun to learn things together- most parents get this! There's always somebody though saying "xyz needs to be taught in schools" e.g. Good manners, balancing a cheque book, gardening and now how to behave around dogs. Its too much. Let parents be parents and introduce their children to these aspects of life.

ComDummings · 15/11/2021 22:05

Or people should stop treating dogs like humans and actually train and exercise them properly. Also stop shitty breeders with no morals.

drspouse · 15/11/2021 22:05

Going into schools does happen, and it's an efficient way to reach a lot of children.

Dogs trust cane and did a talk to our ks1 pupils.

We also have a school dog

Comedycook · 15/11/2021 22:06

Perhaps dog owners could be taught to keep their animals under control and away from people

LolaSmiles · 15/11/2021 22:06

YABU
It's not the job of schools to teach every life skill that someone thinks needs teaching.

Children should not be running up to dogs or harassing them, even if some mumsnetters on every dog thread claim they can't possibly help limit their precious child's wonderfully inquisitive nature by preventing it from charging up to dogs and trying to grab them Hmm. But it's not school's responsibility to step in because some parents are idiots.

Potatolatkes · 15/11/2021 22:07

It would make a decent assembly once every couple of years or so. I’m sure there would be charities who would volunteer to lead one

Helpstopthepain · 15/11/2021 22:08

Maybe children could be taught how to be responsible owners instead?

What next, teach children how to drive at primary because people do have accidents, teach children how to ski because people do have accidents etc

Helpstopthepain · 15/11/2021 22:08

I mean in schools btw re driving and skiing

Prattypitel · 15/11/2021 22:09

I dont think it is the school's responsibility.it is quite amzing though, how few children actually know how to be with a strange dog.you get the occasional child who comes up and asks, can I stroke your dog.But it is very rare.tney are either petrified or bearhug and pull on dogs tale.before all the dog haters reply here with hateful messages:of course there are also stupid dog owners.
