DD not happy at current school - is an Estyn Outstanding out of catchment. Children are just miserable but the results are obviously great.

Decided DD happiness is worth more than anything so rang our catchment school agreed they had a place in reception. Great! Put the in year transfer request in, accepted the place.

Turn up at new school DD has been put in the reception/nursery class! Asked why this was and was told that the reception class was full!

What’s worse is the reception students in the nursery/reception class are summer born or less able!

My DD is a winter baby and very very forward, is reading and doing KS1 maths already. Is there anything I can do now? I spoke to the head who was adamant the reception class is already full, it was filled in September!

I want to move schools again asap AIBU?? or do I see how it goes and have faith that her class teacher will differentiate effectively?

Put your child's happiness first. Leave her be.

Heaven help this child in years to come!

Helenahandbasketbing · 15/11/2021 20:34

Why did you move her so fast? You can’t move her again, she won’t know which way is up. Confused

The problem here is not either school....

wjahyrdy · 15/11/2021 20:38

You've moved her very quickly OP

RaisinFlapjack · 15/11/2021 20:38

I am boggled that you’d switch school on the basis of half a term! Why was she unhappy? What steps had you taken with the school to remedy it?

Unanananana · 15/11/2021 20:41

Oh my! How could they allow her in a class with the uneducated baby riff-raff!!

Your kid is 4 years old. She is in a Reception class, where 4 year olds go. Did you do any research or ask any questions? Or just rely on the Ofsted report?

Bluntness100 · 15/11/2021 20:43

Oh dear op, you need to try to calm down. You can’t be doing this to her, I was very surprised when i realised you were talking about a reception aged child and not a much older one.

wavingwhilstdrowning · 15/11/2021 20:49

I asked for my son to be put in the nursery class rather than move up -why on earth would you want her in the higher class? It won't make her any cleverer....

shouldistop · 15/11/2021 20:51

Are you worried that people will think your child is less able because of the class she's in ?

wehaveachildrensituation · 15/11/2021 20:52

Our school has composite classes which shift around year to year, and it has not done dc any harm at all academically, but it hasn't been great socially, to be honest.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/11/2021 20:54

What happens at the end of yr R?

WonderfulYou · 15/11/2021 20:54

So she’s reception age and has been put in the reception class?

Even if she is gifted then keeping her where she is is best. At that age it’s all about learning social skills and learning through play.
If they think she is gifted then they’ll put her forward a year or give her more difficult work to do.

Sexnotgender · 15/11/2021 20:55

Are you worried these less able tiny children are going to adversely impact your precious genius?

DaisyNGO · 15/11/2021 20:59

I don't think I understood what I just read....

ThisIsNotSocialDistancing · 15/11/2021 20:59

My DD (summer born) was in composite classes with younger children throughout primary. She's now at Cambridge.

KitKat1985 · 15/11/2021 21:01

You sound ridiculous OP.

Firstly you moved her out of a school presumably after only half a term? You didn't really give her much chance to settle.

Now she's in a reception class with younger kids and you have decided she is far too bright and are already complaining to the head teacher. Most of reception is just free play anyway.

And now you are thinking about moving her to her third school in less than a term?!

You really sound like 'that' parent.

Arren12 · 15/11/2021 21:01

My dd is in nursery and is quite able for her age it has done her wonders actually. The teachers there are amazing and really in nursery and reception its learning through play anyway. The main focus is on social aspects of school. My dds teachers are great at extending knowledge through conversations and play.

I have an older summer born dd and it makes little difference academically the older they get.

What does make a difference especially for girls is emotional and social development. If you move her again you will be doing her a disservice.

Precious first born klaxon

Gastonia · 15/11/2021 21:07

My DD (summer born) was in composite classes with younger children throughout primary. She's now at Cambridge.
Ditto Grin The head teacher actually called me in when they had a class assembly, because I was apparently the only mum who hadn't been in to complain about something!

Gastonia · 15/11/2021 21:07

but she was a second child...

Hetyanni · 15/11/2021 21:07

Please don't move the poor kid again. I thought her wellbeing was more important than anything else? 4 years old and 3 schools by Christmas... poor little soul, just let her settle!

wehaveachildrensituation · 15/11/2021 21:08

I think people are being a bit unfair, the OP said she moved her dd because her dd was unhappy - that isn't being "that" parent. Also although I don't think composite classes are hugely problematic academically, they aren't going to suit all children academically or socially, especially if there is a big age gap with most of the other children. I can understand the initial worry.

I think OP you might not find the ideal. Is dd going to be happy socially where she is?

Hellocatshome · 15/11/2021 21:10

I assumed this was going to be a secondary aged kid when you talked about her being unhappy at school and therefore moving schools. Why was she unhappy? Why do you think she won't be unhappy at this school? Also the nursery/reception class is a non issue.
