We live in a terraced house and are currently about to extend the back lounge into a lounge/diner.
We have been saving and making do for ages and really looking forward to doing something nice - we will not be replacing the kitchen but hoping to add some more appliances.
We are a bit strapped for space as we are a family of 4 with a pet so are trying to utilize everything to our best ability.

Current diagram of the kitchen is attached.
We have a small under cupboard fridge and freezer.
The wall where the table currently sits would free up as we are going to move the table into the extension.

Worktop space is used up by:

  • microwave (above drawers)
  • kettle, tea/coffee containers and toaster (corner next to microwave)
  • landline, wifi router and cables in box (above fridge and washing machine)

Things we would like to add/work into the space:

  • american fridge/freezer, it would be amazing for my back to not have to fold myself in half everytime I need to find something
  • coffee machine our dream one hence dimensions included (49cmL x 49cmH x 29cmW)
  • 4 hob cooker , the current one has been here forever, we never use 6 hobs and it's knackered.
  • airfryer
  • dishwasher (if we remove the under counter fridge and freezer there should be space for a built in one)
  • freestanding bin (currently a tiny one under the sink and I need the cupboards Blush )

We keep going back and forth between ideas. DP suggests we put the american fridge where the current cooker is which would actually sit really nicely but not sure where the hob and oven could go.
I thought perhaps the fridge could go on the wall that is being freed up.
But I'm not convinced it will look good - but maybe we can get a worktop attached to the wall next to it and have a spot for the coffee machine there?
We also need to keep in mind that getting a smaller cooker would free up space around the concrete lintels that we could potentially use somehow.

As you can see we are struggling to come up with any concrete ideas.
I would really appreciate some suggestions and tips from you wise mumsnetters as to what you would do with this space?

I'd put American feeezer where the table is and create a coffee/tea station on that side too, along with the toaster.
I'd keep the cooker where it is

I used to manage a kitchen design company so here are my thoughts.
I can't see where you can fit in a full height american fridge freezer and a dishwasher on the same wall as the washing machine and sink.
In our current kitchen we do have a central island with the dishwasher and sink in it so that solves our problem but you need to have a way of getting electricity and water under the floor to the island some how, we did it when we built the house.
If i were you i'd put an island in the middle though to give more cupboard space and perhaps an overhang with a breakfast bar/stools.
I'd change the sink bowl and drainer around to give space to put the washing machine to the left of the sink under the drainer. Then you would have room to have a large fridge/freezer on the right of the window, between it and the front door.
Can i ask if the grey bits either side of the cooker indicate a fire place? Also is their a reason to have a door on the bottom of the stairs that opens out into the kitchen?

Thank you.

I can't see where you can fit in a full height american fridge freezer and a dishwasher on the same wall as the washing machine and sink - I meant the wall that will free up where the table is now.

- that's an interesting idea.
I'd change the sink bowl and drainer around to give space to put the washing machine to the left of the sink under the drainer. Then you would have room to have a large fridge/freezer on the right of the window, between it and the front door - we can't really put a fridge there as we would have to demolish a good chunk of worktop space and overhanging cupboards on that side.
Can i ask if the grey bits either side of the cooker indicate a fire place - I'm guessing it used to be something like that decades ago, it's a very old terraced house. The grey bits are stones, there are two big pillars either side and a lintel which used to be lower down but has been raised to the ceiling now to accommodate an extractor fan.

Also is their a reason to have a door on the bottom of the stairs that opens out into the kitchen? - well its a beautiful door Grin but mainly so DDog isn't sneaking upstairs when he's not supposed to.

I would put the fridge where the cooker is. Put a dishwasher under the sink drainer and a cupboard where the freezer is to give more storage.

I'd then put the oven/hob/cooker on the table wall with a cupboard and worktop to one side and a worktop with bin space under to the other side.

This would give you more storage and more food prep/serving space without having to lose anything. Personally I'd actually source a low pull out bin that is half the height of a base cupboard and have that with the microwave built in above it under the counter next to the cooker to free up some more worktop but you said you want a free standing bin. (Also I'm past the young dc stage!)
