To have work Christmas party on the Saturday before Christmas in the afternoon.

At work I'm responsible for our team, my role is focused around them and had planned our Christmas party months ago as a team only (no partners) event on a Friday afternoon in December. All agreed, numbers confirmed etc.
My boss has now decided he doesn't want to do this anymore and wants us to have a family gathering in the office on the Saturday before Christmas. Just drinks and nibbles, with everyone's partners/kids invited, with the main reason for this change being given as we are now finishing on the 17th of December, gifting people extra leave so we cannot justify giving people another half day off.
AIBU to think this is a ridiculous plan, most people will have plans that Saturday nor will people want to spend a Saturday in an office when they clocked off for the year on the Friday?
I've suggested the Friday from 4pm, but apparently that makes it too hard for partners/family to attend.
I have plans on the Saturday before Christmas, so raised it with my boss that I could attend but not from start to finish. His response was it his expectation as a senior person I'd be there for the team. AIBU or would you attend such an event on a Saturday afternoon?

Now there’s a surprise !! 😂

I wonder if somebody's other half has got wind of this, and brought the thread, and its trenchant comments, to the attention of the proposer of the "bright idea"?

Gosh I wonder why. Grin

He should have listened to you in the first place!

Great news OP. Most of our aged relatives are dead now but we used to always be busy the weekend before Christmas because we'd be visiting relatives we were not seeing for Christmas itself. No way would I have prioritised a work do over that (and definitely not if other peoples' kids (and/or dogs) were going to be there.

If as an employer you don't want a Christmas party to be a reason for everyone having a half day/ day off work then you do what most organisations where everyone can't be off at once do and have it on an evening after work. I find the idea of afternoon Christmas parties odd. Ours has always been on a Friday evening. Attendance optional

HunterHearstHelmsley · 17/11/2021 12:50

The Saturday before Christmas is my hair, nails and lashes pre Christmas. No way would I be able to rebook them now. That definitely takes priority over a works Christmas do.

I rarely go to them anyway. I always feel aggrieved that I'm not being paid Grin

Basically the MD was driving it (to suit his own personal commitments) I pulled the other director aside, his preference is Friday ... the MD threw his toys out the pram and told us to do what we want because he is sick talking about it.
So it's settled, drinks and food in the office from 3 for the team - ON FRIDAY. No family/friends/dogs/cats/clients. Grin
Let's see how this lands .....
(Then I've got a dinner with DH, I'll leave the other house elves to tidy up)

Surprised partners want to go to someone else's xmas do unless very small team and they know each other

I would guess this is probably just the MDs partner who wants to come/is wanted there. Surely at least some of the other partners will be on their own Christmas nights out on the 17th!

All the easier for DH to whisk you off for your dinner... sorry MD I have plans... Wink

I wonder if he shagged someone at a previous Christmas party so his wife doesn't trust him.
