Do you wear many of your clothes?

I absolutely love clothes and fashion. I have a wardrobe full of things to wear, but find myself choosing from the same few garments constantly. Sometimes, actually, all the time, I’ll buy a new thing, hang it on the outside of the wardrobe to prompt me to wear it and STILL won’t wear it. What the fuck is that all about?? Going through my head are things like ‘no point wearing that just to be at home’ or ‘it’ll create more laundry if you wear something different’ etc. Also, I’m only out at work one day a week, and teach yoga also, so am tempted to be in either at home comfies, or yoga gear. Am seriously annoyed with myself. Anyone the same?

Yes this is me too! I can't bring myself to wear my nice things as I think other people will wonder why I'm all dressed up! I really annoy myself and live in jeans!

kowari · 14/11/2021 20:06

If I buy something new I wear it all the time! I wear all of my clothes, at the appropriate times of the year. Certain things are not worn often but I don't keep things I never wear.

Anordinarymum · 14/11/2021 20:22

I've got a wardrobe ( well it's a full rail in a dressing room actually) and I really need to do a massive cull as I do not wear the majority of the clothes hanging there.
I think seeing them is a comfort, but at the same time I struggle to find anything to wear as there are so many things jammed together making it impossible for me to pick something out.
I feel an eBay sell coming on !

LittleGwyneth · 14/11/2021 20:39

I'm the same. I've got hundreds of items of clothing and I wear about nine of them.

dudsville · 14/11/2021 20:42

I used to be this way but wfm got me out of the rut and I now wear my dresses, skirts and nice trousers all the time. Wear something nice tomorrow, for no reason, and don't worry about it.

Tulips15 · 14/11/2021 20:48

I have a reasonable amount but never wear as I feel quite crappy about my size at mo.
I rarely buy clothes but when I do,I wear them a lot and keep them for atleast 2yrs! I have zero fashion sense!
Last month though, I bought a dress , never happens!
DP chose it as I was dismissing everything- His sense of style is far better and I had many compliments wearing it!

I put on 2 stone quite rapidly due to medication, so now I have a very small choice of clothes. I had to buy some new things as literally nothing fitted anymore but I didn’t want to go overboard as I still hope to lose the weight.

What I’ve learnt is I don’t need a huge wardrobe full of clothes. It’s actually so much easier to just choose from a small selection. Less choice can actually make life a lot easier. So now, whatever does happen with me weight wise, I’m not buying any more clothes than I actually need.

JoanWilderbeast · 14/11/2021 20:59

Lol, I call holiday wardrobe syndrome. Bring a choice of outfits but actually just wear a few favourites :)

TheCategoryIs · 14/11/2021 21:00

I've found you do need fewer clothes if you wfh. My clothes don't get as sweaty when I'm just at home. It's a shame if you do like fashion and variety! I wear all my clothes but some of them more than others.

Pottedpalm · 14/11/2021 21:07

I have a wardrobe full of nice things I wore to work; dresses, thick tights, boots, jackets.
Now I wear jeans and a breton top every day

thebear1 · 14/11/2021 21:15

I have more than I need, my maternity wardrobe showed I need only a few outfits but I do like options. I try not buy much new, a lot are ebay or charity shop.

Tittyfilarious81 · 14/11/2021 21:21

I used to be like this my warbrobes were bursting and I could barely move the hangers to get things on and out . This year I did a massive cull Dh filled the car with bags of clothes and shoes to take to a local charity donation warehouse it took me a long time to get through it all but I did it . My whole attitude to clothes ,shoes and bags has completely changed now I have not added to my wardrobe since .

I would like to be like that and have a capsule wardrobe updated with a very few seasonal items to stay current. But alas I had a cull too and then proceeded to buy loads and loads of cheap clothes to fill the void - mostly second hand on Vinted and in charity shops but still. Not to get too deep or anything but I didn't have many clothes as a child and was made fun of at school for what I wore (no uniforms) and I think I still have issues from that!
speakout · 14/11/2021 21:35

Sounds wasteful OP.
I only have stuff I wear. A couple of special dresses, coats for days out, but have no stress about my wardrobe.
Doesn't your yoga attitude find you some calm in that direction?

Tittyfilarious81 · 14/11/2021 21:57

@NotJustACigar I can completely understand because I was the same ,we were very poor so I had hardly any clothes as a child and was bullied terribly so when I could buy my own I couldn't stop if I wanted it and could afford it I bought it . I was the same with my children too I could not bare it if their wardrobe wasn't filled with nice clean clothes because I was afraid of them ever feeling as I did . I'm much better now I can control it but it's taken a long time to get to there

lljkk · 14/11/2021 22:03

About 8 yrs ago I put all my clothes in plastic bags in wardrobe. Things only escaped bag when I wanted to wear them -- over 12 months I actually did wear almost everything & the few items unworn were (eg) ... strapless bra, funeral dress, wedding outfit, special sports clothes, black tights....

Except socks, lol. I have like 120 pairs too many socks. Realistically I still have 'too much' for my needs.

I try very hard to only buy stuff when I'm completely out of something I much like to wear (like if literally no LS shirts left, no clean underwear, etc.). The socks are nearly all cast-offs from DC or gifts.

thenightsky · 14/11/2021 22:03

yes, this is me. Also, my weight fluctuating all over the place by over a stone and half doesn't help, as it means 70% of my wardrobe is unwearable most of the time.

Thatsplentyjack · 14/11/2021 22:06

Yup, I have a normal sized wardrobe but it's crammed. I only open one door and use around 1/8th of the actual wardrobe for the clothes I wear.
With new clothes, I find I have to wear the item within 2 weeks of buying it or I'll never wear it. So I keep the receipt and take it back if u haven't worn it in that time frame.
