To feel like I don't want to buy Christmas presents this year

My DCs are older now, would be different with little ones who wanted toys. But with thinking about the climate especially, I really feel like we've got all we need and I'm just looking to buy things for the sake of it. I don't want things for myself, but do feel like I need to give everyone else presents to open on the day. Anyone else?

How about you give plants

KaptainKaveman · 14/11/2021 14:12

Agreed. It's pointless and like pouring cash down a drain.

XelaM · 14/11/2021 14:15

Give cash. Always the best present

Poetrypatty · 14/11/2021 14:31

Thanks for the suggestions, I hadn't thought of a plant and that's a good idea for some relatives. With the dcs I can do mainly cash and just give them something to open I suppose, perhaps something they will definitely use like toiletries.

How old are your DC?

Yogaandcocoa · 14/11/2021 14:32

You don't have to give gifts

A plant is a nice idea, a voucher, biscuits

Nothing at all

Poetrypatty · 14/11/2021 14:33

Late teens/early 20s SparklingLime

DH's family all do secret santa, and myself and the other partners do our own wee secret santa (DH is one of four). That way, everyone gets a present but there's no pressure to get loads and you've only one person to focus on. Works really well and less stress and money spent.

Candycotton · 14/11/2021 14:51

I'm just doing foodie/drink gifts this year. I'm on maternity leave and not wasting money on pointless shite that will be left in a cupboard forgotten about.

hangrylady · 14/11/2021 14:56

Well you obviously don't have to give presents but it all sounds a bit bloody miserable.

Nearlytheretrees · 14/11/2021 15:00

We only do edible or bath stuff for most people. I hate having to find a place for gifts so don't want to give something they haven't asked for

ihatethecold · 14/11/2021 15:08

me neither op.my kids are the same ages and I just cannot be bothered this year.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 14/11/2021 15:24

We have 5 kids aged between 20 and 35, all with partners this Christmas. They are all in different financial positions - students, professionals, zero hours/minimum wage etc so we have decided that we will do a Secret Santa for the 12 of us with an agreed budget of £ 20.00. We have a family FB group where we are all sharing Amazon wish lists and suggestions so we all know we will get something we will appreciate and no one will be over stretched financially.

Ricetwisty · 14/11/2021 15:26

Ask what they actually want?

Stompythedinosaur · 14/11/2021 15:41

I think it is fine to say you don't want any gifts yourself, but sad for your dc to to get anything. There are so many gifts that aren't items, or are lasting, sustainable items.

Lipsandlashes · 14/11/2021 15:44

As a teen I’d have been gutted if my mum and dad didn’t bother buying me anything. It doesn’t have to be throw away crap! How about some lovely makeup (if you have daughters) or a good quality leather purse/wallet/handbag? Some pyjamas? Nice chocolates? A cashmere jumper?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 14/11/2021 15:46

Surely there must be some middle ground. Late teens early 20s usually appreciate clothes, trainers, perfume/aftershave. Not a plant.

Poetrypatty · 14/11/2021 16:06

I'm not going to not get them anything. It's just that there's a sense of getting things for the sake of it. I've asked what they want but they haven't come up with anything. Clothes are hard to choose for this age group. Things like music and films are on apps which they have already got. They don't use wallets nowadays. Toiletries food and pjs are always welcome I suppose, maybe sportswear. Thanks for these ideas.
