How old is DC?

My DS is in Yr 1 and I put Matthew* A-B
as when I've put M Apple-Banana he hasn't recognised ihis jumper (His double barrelled surname is longer than Apple-Banana)

As a parent of a child with a fairly long DB name I'd say no. Use her full surname.

TeenMinusTests · 14/11/2021 07:53

How upset will you feel with people shortening the surname to Roe, or G-Roe, or G-R? What would you prefer they use?

Use that.

No.

Use either "Alice G-R"

Or "Glendennen Roe"

My son has a double barrelled surname. Sometimes his things are Alex AB (not real name obvs). Any clothes have full name on.
My husband ALWAYS writes his name on things as Alex B leaving off the part of the name thst is mine. It pisses me off. Each and every time I see his name written that way.
Unless his name is really long, you can get personalised stickers/stamps/ name tags with the full name. Also, I find items with full names find their way back easier.

Twizbe · 14/11/2021 08:04

We've put just the surname on school items (ready for handing down lol)

If I ever don't want to put our whole surname I put the initials.

itsgettingwierd · 14/11/2021 08:10

My ds is Matthew Smithson- Smith (not real name!)

I've always shorted things when writing labels and we either use

Matthew S-S
Matthew S-Smith
Matty S-Smith
M. S-S if just scribbling on label if sports kit!

No one has ever had an issue understanding it's his!

With my double barrelled surnamed DS I did: Alice G-R on school clothes labels (example!)

I have a double barrel - both quite long (imagine Kingcaid-Taylor). For work and email address I just call myself Taylor but it does cause problems sometimes. For my DS I always put the full name on all name tags.

honeylulu · 14/11/2021 09:11

Matthew S-Smith

This is the format we used when the name was too long for the tapes.

For a primary child it's important the first name is on there in full. Imagine teaching assistant picking up jumper in a room full of 5 year olds:
"Matthew ... Is this your jumper?" < Matthew looks up>
Or "S Smith? Who is S Smith?"

It's not great to restrict part of the surname but there hyphen denotes that it is part of a longer double barrel. Some manufacturers have woken up to how common double barrelling is now as we have had no trouble getting our youngest's full name on name labels. (We like Stikins which are very durable and no sewing!)

SusieBob · 14/11/2021 09:28

It's just a label for a jacket. As long as it is clear who it is, it really doesn't matter.
