Carpets Vs laminate

.......in bedrooms????? Good idea or bad? Due to have new carpets fitted in a fortnight. We stayed at a holiday cottage last week and the bedrooms had laminate flooring with rugs and it all felt so clean and fresh, DH actually agreed 😳😳 but should we go for it or not? Am absolutely rubbish at making decisions, this is really stressing me out.....therefore will definitely go with result of this vote!!! *It will be cheap wood effect, we're on a budget.

We’ve got kardean in all our rooms except the main room as we’ve not got round to doing it. I love carpet but our kids have Sen so carpets would’ve ended up in a mess.

Cupcakeschocolate · 13/11/2021 18:23

I prefer laminate as with kids it's easy to clean. Doesn't trap dust and if you have pets, fur.

MaryST7 · 13/11/2021 18:25

Sorry...if voting let's go for YABU for carpets, YANBU for laminate. What is kardean please, #fadingout?? 🤔

We have wood floor with rugs in our bedrooms. Carpets were a no due to asthma in the family. Wood floors can be hoovered and washed very easily. The rugs are just to have a warm spot for your toes getting out of bed.

PinkSkirt · 13/11/2021 18:28

Arrest are designed to hold the dirt until you Hoover. That includes dust, mites and other Ick. People who complain that hard floors show the first are happy it’s there and hidden.
We felt so much healthier getting rid of bedroom carpet.

Claudia84 · 13/11/2021 18:28

I think laminate looks lovely but in reality can be quite 'echoey' and I wouldn't want to be mopping the floors upstairs. I can imagine in a home let it would make it much easier for proper cleaning when people care less about shoes indoors but in a home it might actually be more work than carpet.
But I say all this with the opinion that yes it does look very lovely.

magicstars · 13/11/2021 18:28

Just had my carpets replaced with laminate in bedrooms. Due to allergies. Much more hygienic & easier to keep clean. They look lighter & brighter too. You do need slippers though!

MuthaFunka61 · 13/11/2021 18:29

I've got lino (cushion floor) throughout and its great and easy to keep clean.
Plus it's loads cheaper!

cobblers123 · 13/11/2021 18:31

I had new carpet fitted in the bedroom earlier this week. New underlay and a really lovely soft carpet. When i walk on it it feels so luxurious. Personally wouldn't have hard flooring but that's just me.

Really pleased with it but I have banned the cat from the room as he has occasionally thrown up on the old carpet.

inmyslippers · 13/11/2021 18:32

I prefer laminate. Have a 4 year old and a cat. It's soo much easier to clean

inmyslippers · 13/11/2021 18:32

Although I'd much prefer carpet and fabric
Sofa 😁

Hankunamatata · 13/11/2021 18:34

Eldest has laminate in his bedroom and it is noisy. Probably not so bad in an adult room but 13 year old sounds like a pet elephant. We are debating getting lvt as might be less echo

A580Hojas · 13/11/2021 18:34

I would always want carpet in bedrooms. In most rooms actually, I think laminate is awful.

Tal45 · 13/11/2021 18:36

In my next house I don't want carpet anywhere, I hate it. I want tiles or laminate and rugs. Whenever we're abroad there is never carpet and I think it's much nicer. People can come in wearing their shoes with tiles and you don't have to worry, with carpet it's really ick IMO, and asking people you don't know or don't know well to take their shoes off seems a bit strange to me.

oow we are getting it in the kitchen next month - glue down type
RedHot22 · 13/11/2021 18:39

If you really can’t afford wood I would favour Karndean instead of laminate, with rugs under the bed.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 13/11/2021 18:44

We have laminate all upstairs and it's great. I don't find it cold, we do have runners along our beds and the teen has a fluffy rug. It's easy to keep clean and mopping takes 5 minutes.

There's a certain smell that comes with carpets that I dislike, regardless of how clean it's kept. I don't like to walk barefoot on carpet either so this was the more sensible option for us.

Fadingout · 13/11/2021 18:46

flooringandcarpetcentre.co.uk/2021/03/what-is-karndean-flooring/ - basically vinyl flooring but I find it better than laminate

steppemum · 13/11/2021 18:48

In bedrooms I'd always carpet.

warmer, quieter, nicer to sit on for kids playing.

expatmigrant · 13/11/2021 18:48

I have oiled wood floors downstairs and karndean upstairs in all the bedrooms. Only have carpet on stairs and landing. Karndean is absolutely brilliant for easy cleaning. Wood floors need a bit more maintenance.

LakieLady · 13/11/2021 18:54

Laminate is noisy in upstairs rooms unless you use good quality sound-deadening underlay, which puts the cost up.

I'd also recommend buying a decent quality laminate rather than basic stuff as it seems much more resistant to damage. I used cheap stuff in my kitchen and it really damages easily, but the Quick Step laminate in the bathroom seems to withstand having things dropped on it etc without showing any marks or damage.

If the surface of laminate gets wet after it's damaged it "blows" - basically starts to fall apart.
