To feel irritated about passwords

Seriously, how have we not changed how online passwords work since the Internet was invented?

I'm so sick of "choose a password that meets this criteria", then you forget it or put it in wrong or whatever so have to do a "reset password". You put in a new password or one of your usual variations and get "this password has already been used. Please choose a new password". Which inevitably you arent going to remember since it's not one of your standards.

Shouldn't we have moved on from this archaic system now? Why cant websites just evolve to make log in accessible via your device or an app or something? Its fucking annoying.

Best advice I saw on this was from a previous Mumsnet thread Think of a memorable phrase - eg Jack and Jill Take the first letter of each word JAJ add the first letter of the website URL eg M for Mumsnet Plus a memorable PIN and symbol So the password is JAJM1234? for Mumsnet JAJT1234? for Tesco JAJA1234? for Amazon This has really helped me remember passwords (obviously not what I actually use)
You reallyshouldnt use similar passwords for different things.

My phone froze recently and the fingerprint sensor disappeared. It would not accept any swipe pattern either. I do my banking through an app on my phone so had to go in online via my tablet instead. Except...to verify it was me, the bank send a code to my phone - which i couldnt get into!
While all this was going on, my bank card was used fraudulently. I didnt know about it as wasnt getting the warning messages on my frozen phone!! Fucking nightmare. Dont save your card details for ease of use on sites you visit regularly. It was Etsy on this occasion

I dont mind it but for somewhere like ravelry where your literally logging in to see free knitting patterns I do not see why I need a password that is a certain length style with numbers etc there is no protected information its free! Maybe have a sign in on the part where you might need to pay (I can't remember if they do paid patterns part) but just to view a free pattern....why the password
My patterns library on ravelry includes several paid for patterns that i can access there as pdfs. Keeping track of who has only free patterns and who has paid for and having different security requirements would be very complex

For remembering passwords, I would never write down a password, however I have a system whereby I write down reminders, for example initials of the town where I spent my 60th birthday, number of nephews, number of the first house we bought etc. I suppose nothing is completely foolproof, but this works well for me.

I am very nervous of the idea of relying on fingerprints. What if you damage your finger, e.g. accidentally scratch or cut it, would the device then not recognise it?
