To think Ed Sheeran’s song “Shivers” is a rip off of “Movin too fast” by Artful Dodger and Romina Johnson?

Sorry if I’m out of the loop and behind the times with what I think is a revelation. But I’ve just heard this song (Sheeran’s) in full for the first time and wondered whether it took a sample from “Movin too fast” but Google brings up nothing so I don’t think it was on purpose. I think the chorus sounds very similar almost to the point of copyright. Do you?

I think Ed Sheeran is well known for this, he generally just pays off anyone who claims against him so it doesn't go to court. He blatantly lifts entire refrains or choruses.

However, there is a limited number of ways that musical notes can be put together in a pleasing manner. Everyone who currently writes music has heard and been influenced by so many songs that it must be hard to do something that has never been done before.

'Bad Habits' reminds me of 'Smalltown Boy'. Does anyone know if it was officially sampled by Sheeran? If not it's a blatant rip-off.

MorrisZapp · 13/11/2021 12:11

Bad Habits sounds like Get the Party Started by Pink.

But the best 'sounds like' is Beautiful Day by U2. It's got a bit that sounds EXACTLY like The Sun Always Shines on TV by A-ha.

Once you've heard it you can never unhear it. To be fair you would expect a song about what bed sheets smell like to include someone sniffing a sheet in the video.

I’ve said that before to dh. It really does.

@SoniaFouler

00:39 on the first vid and 00:29 on the second vid sounds the same to me ¯\\(ツ)
They don't sound alike at all...
StrawberrySquash · 13/11/2021 12:36

YUBU for being the reason I just listened to a minute and a half of Ed Sheeran. I can't really hear it other than the odd single note that could be going that way but don't IYSWIM. And the Ooh.

KenAdams · 13/11/2021 12:44

Everyone does it. Memories by Maroon 5 is Pachelbels Canon in D but the copyright on most classical has expired now so it's easier for musicians to do now

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/11/2021 14:39

A lot of songs are actually Pachelbel's Canon in D.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 13/11/2021 18:45

I vaguely see what you mean but it’s not really the same.

But wtf has happened to Ed Sheeran? He was v mopey before but this is an overhaul

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/11/2021 19:05

Sounds like it heavily borrowed from Despacito to me.

HikingforScenery · 13/11/2021 19:14

Wow, you’re right. As op said, he’s got form for this sort of thing. Perhaps, they’ve sorted out copyright issues ahead of the release beforehand 🤔

JurgensCakeBaby · 13/11/2021 19:56

It sounds like any late nineties early 2000s two step garage/pop. Ed Sheeran is really shit

PrincessNutella · 13/11/2021 20:10

Wow, it sounds just the same. Also, the lyrics of Sheeran's songs are quite stupid. "Lipstick on my guitar"? Is his girlfriend fellating it?

SoupDragon · 13/11/2021 22:59

The lyrics of most songs are quite stupid!

Tangofandango · 14/11/2021 09:29

When I listen to Bad Habits I just hear Get the Party Started by Pink

I can't hear any similarity at all 😂

It's odd how people are all hearing different similarities though - it can't really be like all of the suggestions can it?

There's a song by CamelPhat (called Rabbit Hole, now I've googled) that I always think is going to be Acapella by Kellis when I hear it on the radio.

Pippi1970 · 14/11/2021 09:48

@ClemFandangoCanYouHearMe

Not a fan, but then I can't get the image of him sniffing the bed sheets where a woman was sleeping out of my head.
God yes. Grim

@Bluesheep8

Graffiti Overpass sounds like Love is a Battlefield by Pat Benetar too.
The instrumental of Little Mix's Another Breakup song makes me think of Love is a Battlefield. Maybe this is a new old sound!
granhands1 · 16/11/2021 21:07

I just keep imagining him shivering like one of those little dogs. Urgh

Chickychoccyegg · 16/11/2021 21:15

I'm no fan of Ed Sheeran, and I do like moving too fast, but think you're really reaching finding a similarly there

TrickorTreacle · 16/11/2021 21:40

@Youhaveyourhandsfull

There’s nothing new under the sun and you can play literally thousands of songs with 4 chords in the same order. Just the way it is.
I don't get the similarity with the Artful Dodger, but I have noticed that a lot of chart music have the same 4 chords that you describe.

It's particularly bad with dance music. They're always using that 4-chord sequence!

DukkaDukka · 16/11/2021 21:48

Part of the new Adele song (which I can’t stand) reminds me of Never Ending Story.

Bad Habits is definitely Cry for You by September which is also Smalltown boy by Bronski beat.
