To take up a childhood hobby

After years of toying with the idea I’ve decided to book a set of ice skating lessons as I did it as a child and adored it and quit when I was 14 and always regretted it. I briefly did it again 9 years ago aged 19 when a pop up ice rink opened locally that Xmas and I got a job as an ice warden. I kept telling myself that I was too old to start again, wouldn’t be good any more but I’ve come to realise that I only want to do it for personal enjoyment, I’m not aiming to be professional. I wouldn’t be confident to try spins or jumps right away but I’d be happy enough to just glide round the rink for the excercose. Now my kids are at school I’d rather spend my money and time in the morning doing this for excercise instead of spin or Pilates? Have you ever rediscovered a hobby you used to love? What is it and have you kept it up?

Well I do the Pilates to wake up the muscles I'd forgotten I had for the last 40 years.
In fact, they're so awake now I feel strong enough to have booked an adult beginners tap dancing course starting after Xmas. I haven't tapped in 40 yrs.

Life is in the way now, but I did a few years of adult ballet and loved it. I'd happily go back again when my evenings are free again after the mum-taxi phase.

Currently on cold water swimming. Not so much a childhood thing though as I didn't learn until 16!

I enjoy an occasional ice-skating session. I've got roller blades that I dust off now and then!

@Legoisthebest

MsAgnes unfortunately I have to build on a budget. I rarely go above a £45 set. Still love it though and build lots of nonsense !!
Excellent work! I think you need more imagination if your supply is limited. And I am now wondering if I should feel more guilty than I do about the Home Alone house, which I am impatiently waiting to arrive… 😁

MsAgnesDiPesto an actual Lego home alone house? Please post a pic when you do it! That sounds amazing

I had ponies as a child but was always a bit nervous and could never afford proper lessons. I use to look longingly at those who could showjump, and have continued for the past 20 horse-less years.

Guess what I do twice a week now Grin

Here’s a screenshot! It has all the jokes from the film. I HAD to have it 😁

I lived in my roller boots as a teen and took it up again in my forties. Could still go backwards and everything. Totally go for it.

This is how it starts. We’ll have you in the fold by new year
XelaM · 13/11/2021 01:00

OP - if you follow current ladies skating, most of the teenage girls can't keep up with the Empress that is Elizaveta Tuktamysheva. The late 20's veteran is in the form of her life and her career took MANY breaks/heartbreaks over the last decade. You're never too old!

And of course Aliona Savchenko finally won her elusive Olympic Gold at 35! Grin

Do it!
This is what life is for. Doing stuff that makes you feel good
I went back to playing in musical groups after many years away and love it

hettie · 13/11/2021 07:11

Went back to playing hockey in my 40's. It's been brilliant...Go for it

GoodnightGrandma · 13/11/2021 07:18

I’ve always thought I’d like to give tap a go, and I’d love to get some roller boots but there’s no where near me with a rink.

StuntNun · 13/11/2021 07:28

Yes do it! I started Learn to Skate lessons in September in my mid-40s and having never really skated before. It's a nice social activity as well as exercise and learning a new skill. Don't forget to schedule in practice time. My rink lets you stay in the ice after your lesson and gives you a second free session per week (only on school days though.)

Theteapot · 13/11/2021 07:30

I took up netball two years ago, absolutely love it! Also ride my bike in the woods and I'm building a go kart!

FreedomFaith · 13/11/2021 07:32

Do it. Even if you fall over, you get back up and carry on. You'll love it. Maybe you can get lessons too once you've had a few sessions and see if you can learn to do spins again. Smile

Great idea. I've only ever been ice skating twice (I think). I thought I would be rubbish at it but surprisingly was okay. Sadly there are no rinks close to me so I was never able to go again. So YANBU - go for it!
