Why have I got blonde hair and no one else in my family has?

I had white blonde hair as a child, now it’s still very light as an adult. I occasionally highlight it, but it’s still blonde without dye.

No one in my family has blonde hair ! I honestly thought I was adopted as a child.
My mum had very dark hair (now grey), my dad the same, almost jet black in wedding photos of them. My brother has very dark brown hair. My maternal grandmother had naturally jet black hair, my maternal grandfather had dark hair, my paternal grandmother had auburn hair and my paternal grandfather had dark brown hair too!

How does this work?!
My son takes after me with white blonde hair though.

Regessive gene

SleepingStandingUp · 12/11/2021 21:40

In simple terms I think dark hair is dominant over fair hair so if your Mom and Dad both had a fair hair chromosome and a dark hair chromosome, they'd be dark but could each pass you a fair hair Chromosome. So you would be fair haired.
You'd then pass one to your DS along with his Dad.

Or you're a genetic glitch 😂

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 12/11/2021 21:48

Two of my siblings are blonde, the other is a red head and I have black hair. They are also little and curvy, I am athletic and tall 🤷‍♀️

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 12/11/2021 21:49

I also have black hair with blue eyes, brown eyed parents and siblings

beatrice82 · 12/11/2021 21:51

I don't say this in a patronising way, but this is taught at gcse so if you take a look at bbc bitesize biology, there'll be some great information on dominant and recessive genes.

Landof · 12/11/2021 21:58

Well either your mum had an affair. Or. More logically. It's genetics and how they work. Haha.

3scape · 12/11/2021 22:02

I'm ginger to two dark haired parents. It's genetics. I had a friend who firmly believed my son couldn't be my husband's child owing to his blue eyes (note HAD a friend?. Both husband and I are brown eyed. I suggest reading up on the percentage likelihoods and recessive genes. It might help you fell you fit in more.

HerRoyalWitchyness · 12/11/2021 22:13

Genetics are funny things. I have 3 children all with different coloured eyes.
DS1 has Hazel Amber eyes
DD has deep brown eyes
DS2 has blue eyes with partial heterochromia so he has a brown patch in his right eye

ArnoldBee · 12/11/2021 22:18

Both my sons (different dads) have blonde hair. Their fathers both have dark brown hair and so do I. Must be my strong genes!

ArnoldBee · 12/11/2021 22:19

Oh and my parents had dark brown hair too!

It’s a recessive gene.

Unless your milkman had very blonde hair too. But that’s highly unlikely.

Pedalpushers · 12/11/2021 22:21

Technically speaking any two parents could produce a child with pretty much any colour hair.

ShaneTheThird · 12/11/2021 22:22

Me and my sisters have black hair like our parents and all our brothers are blonde. My siblings have gone on to have dark haired daughters and blonde sons Grin

Helicoptorlife · 12/11/2021 22:25

It’s simple genetics. Obviously your parents have a recessive blonde hair gene. So your mother is

Blonde x Black and your Dad is Black x Blonde
Your genetics selected the blonde from each so blonde x blonde hence you are blonde. They are a mix of blonde and black yet black is dominant so they both have black hair.

Mykittensmittens · 12/11/2021 22:25

I agree it’s so odd (even though I get how it works).

I am very dark - as in Celtic dark. I have almost black hair, darkest brown eyes, dark dark body hair (eyelashes, brows and arm/hair leg) and have to wax my upper lip etc. think Celtic/Italian dark mix. Olivey skin with lots of moles and dark pigmentation.

My DH is dark haired and olive skinned but with tons of freckles and paler skin.

Our DC are grey eyed and pale pale skinned with not a mole or freckle. They have blonde hair. DS slightly darker. One has enormous dark eyelashes, the other pale short eyelashes.

I swear put together no one would think my DC are genetically linked to me or DH. They just look nothing like either of us due to their colouring!

CathyTre · 12/11/2021 22:27

I have blonde hair and hazel yet - both my parents and all of my brothers have dark hair and blue eyes/ hazel eyes in two of them.

I have three sons. All fair at birth/ young kids but my youngest two now have brown hair -eldest still very blonde; interestingly he doesn’t like his blonde hair despite it being a shade a lot if people pay for!)

Genetics I guess 🤷‍♀️

Callcat · 12/11/2021 22:32

I have glitchy children! One's tall white blonde althletic pale skin and gets a gold tan, ones v.short olive skinned, light brown hair and goes v.dark in the sun and the last one is tall extremely pale ginger. They're quite the assortment! The only thing they have in common are their eye colour. Genetics are fascinating!

VestaTilley · 12/11/2021 22:41

Recessive gene isn’t it? One of your grandparents was probably blonde as a child.

justasking111 · 12/11/2021 22:52

Great grandpa blonde then it missed the next generation, my DS was white blonde as is his youngest child. Now I suspect that great great grandmother was of Teutonic stock. Her features certainly were. On holiday abroad the Germans on the beach always assumed my ds was German and spoke to him in German which was amusing

Abouttimemum · 12/11/2021 22:58

Some genes are more dominant than others and occasionally the recessives are passed by both parents and voila!

Abouttimemum · 12/11/2021 22:58

Same reason I have green eyes I suppose!

user1471604848 · 12/11/2021 23:03

Yes, generics is so interesting.
My twins are half-Greek, so before they were born, I assumed they'd have dark features.
But my son has bright blue eyes, blonde hair and light-olive skin.
My daughter has hazel eyes, chestnut hair and medium-olive skin.

PickAChew · 12/11/2021 23:06

Dark and tawny haired parents. (very) Dark hair myself. Ginger and blond siblings.

Ginger husband. 2 blond boys - one white blind until he hit puberty.

It's definitely not simple dominant inheritance

Buddhabowl · 12/11/2021 23:06

Our son really surprised me. I've heard of and seen dark haired people having blonde children and dark skinned having a light skinned baby due to paler genes being recessive. But our second son is the opposite. We are both very fair, particularly DH who was ginger as a child and is now dark brown but still fair skinned and freckly. I'm blonde and fairly light skinned. Our DS has olive skin and brown hair! His tan is the envy of the family!
