Just saw this in the news: Durham University promotes training for students working in the adult sex industry. On a Zoom call. Full booked.

I think this is whopping mad: AIBU?

Some people chose to be sex workers, this course is about helping them do it safely. I don't think it's a bad thing.

slashlover · 13/11/2021 06:46

It's not training for students, it's teaching students already in the sex industry how to be safer.

GaspingGekko · 13/11/2021 08:01

I see the argument of we're helping those who are already doing be safe.
But can you imagine them giving courses to help students deal drugs more safely if they discovered more students were doing that to make ends meet?

For me Durham Uni should be investigating ways to allow students to afford uni life without working in an industry which comes at a considerable risk to personal safety.

Butchyrestingface · 13/11/2021 08:07

Ugh. 🤮

Sertadopt · 13/11/2021 08:29

I think it’s been mis-reported tbh. The uni have made a statement here. www.durham.ac.uk/about-us/notices/sex-worker-support/
I think it’s good that they are making sure all students can access support!

Guavaf1sh · 13/11/2021 08:59

I think it’s like sex education for schools. It’s not encouraging it but rather trying to keep those doing it safer than they otherwise would be

Possiblynotever · 14/11/2021 13:04

I hear what you all say, but I think that it would be more effective if Uni understood that students have to work to afford their fees and of they would help them effectively in the process. Giving them a Zoom session on how to stay safe selling your image in soft porn or other is just accepting the practice, disturbing and disgusting.

Nope this is normalising something that is not really on.

SusieBob · 14/11/2021 13:12

You either stick your heads in the sand or you accept that it happens and try to make it as safe as possible.

Meatshake · 14/11/2021 13:24

It's been happening for a long time. There were certainly student sex workers when I was at Bath Uni in the early 00s.

Better that they offer support and advice than ignore it just because it's unpalatable.
