This can't be legal, can it?

An acquaintance has invited me to her "profit club" group on Facebook. I've had a quick look and it looks like she is asking people to sign up to betting sites to get them to claim offers for new customers. She sends them money to deposit and then they give her the log in details so she can complete the offer and they share the profit. This sounds seriously dodgy to me!

She is running the group but someone else has posted the information with how it works which makes me think someone else has put her up to this. She is the kind who has been sucked into MLMs before. If it is dodgy, I'm not sure if she would realise. I don't know her very well, so I'm not sure if I should say anything to her?

It's Matched Betting but she has had her own accounts gubbed so is asking others to sign up and splitting the profit. Not illegal.

Very dodgy. No idea whether it's legal or not but it definitely sounds fraudulent. Run a mile!

It’s a variation on matched betting by the sound of it. That’s quite easy to do once you understand it and can be very profitable if you can be arsed. Takes a bit of time though. DH dabbles in it using only the free money, last month he made £700ish off the back of entirely free money that’s gambled over and only on matched bets so you can’t lose. It’s legal. I wouldn’t be sharing my profits though!
I’d steer clear.

I'm aware of matched betting, which sounds pretty complicated and not something I would get involved with.

This sounds like something else though. Sharing accounts to take advantage of new customer offers?

I have no intention of getting involved, I'm just concerned she could get into trouble. Of course, there's always the possibility that she knows exactly what she's doing and won't welcome my input!

Sounds dodgy. Have nothing to do with it.

SomethingPunny · 11/11/2021 23:45

Here's the information about it. Has anyone heard of this before?

You are her target audience. You have no interest in doing it yourself, her service is to do it on your behalf and split the money.

She does the work but she needs you (the other party) to create accounts in their name to do it.

Most people that do matched betting use the free offers that betting companies offer to tempt customers and not their own cash. You need lots of email addresses and bank cards to maximise it, and they get wind of you gradually and try to stop you signing up again. Hence trying to get people to use their details to access the offers in return for a share.
But you’d have to daft to do it.
