To ask how to get flexible retirement

retiremeoff · 11/11/2021 22:33

Flexible retirement requested but refused on grounds of business needs (wouldn't be able to recruit for days not being worked) and financial pressure from pension.

AIBU to ask you -
Is there anything that could be used in an appeal to try to persuade an approval?

Just look for anothr role that is part time?
I always feel that with reducing hours, your pay is reduced pro rata, but the expectations of what work you'll get through doesn't

Employers are not mandated to offer flexible retirement.

When you say flexible retirement do you mean going part time and using your pension fund to pay for the days you aren't working?

How old are you? Is actual retirement not an option then?

Yes this is what I mean.

Asking for someone that is 60 in 18 months.

No but if I was trying to compose some reasoning to persuade them to do so, what points may I consider using?

So effectively a flexible working request has been turned down. The appeal deals with either a failure of process or if there were solutions the employee did not offer in their original applications. The employer has used one of the standard business reasons that are allowed to turn down applications.
Can the person think of solutions that would streamline working practices to allow them to go part time.
Or can they think of recruitment platforms that their employer might not have thought of to recruit someone part time.

Sorry, is this for you or someone else?

My previous boss negotiated ot by saying "either I go and work somewhere else or I go part time". She was very hard to replace though.

Are you NHS? I am doing exactly what you describe. I needed to ensure that there was a balanced view of how my reduced hours would 'benefit' my department. In my case, I was able to say that the budget saved from my role could go towards increasing the part-time hours of our team secretary, who does a very valuable job that underpins the work of the whole team. My role is valuable of course, but I am not the only person who can do it.

Have you been accepted or rejected yet or working through an appeal?
DilemmaDelilah · 20/11/2021 08:03

@nearly2022 It was accepted. I am so relieved! 😁
