Keeping DC away from School due to Covid numbers

Jet7 · 11/11/2021 17:45

There are 600ish students in DC’s school.

Since the weekend:
17 students & 3 teachers have tested positive (PCR)
16 students have tested positive (LF) and waiting on PCR results to confirm

Apparently, DCs still need to go to school and any absence would be marked as unauthorised.

I don’t think DCs should be at school. Should I just bite the bullet and homeschool?

@Watchingyou2sleezes

With such an idiotic over reaction- your kids really don't need to be home schooled by someone so foolish
This is what puts people off asking for advice and end up making decisions by themselves when they could have made better decisions engaging with factual and non judgemental comments. Everyone has had times in this pandemic when they've wobbled, especially when loved ones are concerned.

If you're asking WYBU unreasonable to withdraw them from school and home-educate permanently then no, of course YANBU. Any parent has a right to choose home-education over mainstream school. If you're asking WYBU to take them out of school temporarily because you're anxious about Covid and expect the school to provide work or catch them up once you decide to send than back then YABU.

GiveMeNovocain · 11/11/2021 18:58

We're all going to be exposed to covid many times in our lives so you have a choice. You can either trust the vaccines and many studies showing most kids just shrug off covid and get on with things or shrink your family's life to avoid it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/11/2021 18:59

YABU..Covid is here to stay.

happytoday73 · 11/11/2021 19:00

Unless your child is particularly vulnerable... No... Many schools have/had higher rates

Tal45 · 11/11/2021 19:07

My son says there are about a third of the people in his secondary school classes missing everyday. They didn't get their covid jabs as Virgin Healthcare ran out of time and couldn't come back so now we all have to try to arrange one - the nearest place is 18 miles away.

Heckythump1 · 11/11/2021 19:17

My DDs year 1 class only had 50% of children in today and the teacher also has covid.
All the children in the class have had to do PCR tests and we're do LFTs every day at the moment.
Hasn't even occured to me to keep her off though! If she gets it, she gets it.

TabithaTiger · 11/11/2021 19:24

Is anyone in the family CEV? Are you fully vaccinated? If yes, the YABU. No one would have batted an eyelid (or indeed even been aware) if 30ish out of 600 students were off sick with flu. This is no different, we have to learn to live with it. Being out of school is far more damaging for DC. If you're not happy with this, then you have the option to home school permanent,y, but you can't just pick and choose.

Mammyloveswine · 11/11/2021 19:28

I'm a teacher.. Covid rife at my school.., I'm currently awaiting a pcr result as my husband has tested positive.. I've been in today and will be in whilst my lateral flows still show negative...

It's a complete u turn and I do get why people are feeling nervous!

Jet7 · 11/11/2021 19:41

DC is in year 1 so too young for the vaccine. We are not vulnerable.

I run my own business, work my own hours and I have the option of homeschooling permanently.

School emailed us the numbers this afternoon. Lots of parents are now saying they are not sending their DCs in.

If you want to homeschool that is your prerogative. However, time out of school due to covid has been massively more detrimental to children than covid itself in the majority of cases so I absolutely wouldn't be taking them out for that reason.

polkadotpixie · 11/11/2021 20:19

I would send DC in without hesitation. My DS had it a few weeks back (caught at preschool) and it was just a cold really, I certainly wouldn't be concerned if he caught it again. Just about everyone I know's DC have had it and none of them have been more than mildly unwell

We caught it off DS and I (double jabbed but overweight), DH (unvaccinated) and my DPs (double jabbed but mid-late sixties) were all also fine and no iller than a cold

I'm not a COVID denier, I absolutely believe in its seriousness for some people but if you and your DC are not vulnerable then I think it would be an overreaction to pull them out

Verbena87 · 11/11/2021 20:23

Those numbers really aren’t bad compared to many schools recently. We had a celebratory email round staff as we currently ‘only’ have 28 confirmed cases (a few weeks back it was over 300).

I do get the anxiety, but as others have said this is normal for now. The whole thing is a lot to process.

MargaretThursday · 11/11/2021 21:04

I'm thinking similar. Ds' year is about 40% off with positive tests. This is a little worrying as their year was also hit last November and a number are on their second bout.
He's vulnerable and had his first vaccination last Monday (as soon as we were offered it). I was wondering about keeping him off for a week to give it time to kick in properly.
His sister suggests we put him to live in the garage until we know he hasn't got it... Grin

phonetica · 11/11/2021 21:07

What do your kids want?

I don’t think I could remove mine from school and their friends, particularly since you’ve stayed you are not vulnerable. I take it you are double vaccinated?

bnotts · 11/11/2021 21:15

More than half of my Yr6 Child's class were off the first few weeks of term. But it took more than 4 weeks from first case to last new infection. . So how long would you keep them off. More than 5 in a class is considered an outbreak but this basically only triggers more ventilation, more handwashing, advised to LFT more often and a staggered start to avoid the rest of the year groups. My daughter got it as did her younger sister , both minor symptoms, I got it minor symptoms and their clinically vulnerable Dad missed it completely. We would only know numbers due to Class WhatsApps, school shouldn't tell you. It's a relief to be honest . A bit like when they got chicken pox !
