Attic bedroom

Mum233 · 11/11/2021 15:30

DH and I are looking at a house. Our 2 DC want to share a room. We are looking at one where the DC would be in the huge attic bedroom together and DH and I would be in the level below in the smaller bedroom.
AIBU to be worried about the children being on the level above us in case of fire or am I being ridiculous? They are 5 and 6

what is the access like?
I've seen attic rooms/loft extensions with step ladder or spiral stair case arrangements, or withboth of which would be a bit dodgy, or normal access with (maybe slightly steep) stairs.

ThinWomansBrain · 11/11/2021 15:35

If you don't feel comfortable about it now, you could always make that your room and swap when they are a bit older.

Mum233 · 11/11/2021 15:38

It’s got normal stairs to the attic bedroom x

I live in that type of house, our DC have always been above us rather than below. I worried about intruders breaking in at night coming into their bedrooms first.

bizarrustii · 11/11/2021 15:40

Never really thought about fire only intruders.

Goneback2school · 11/11/2021 15:44

Check the door. We converted our attic on the 2nd floor and because of fire regulations it needed a heavy fire door. Teenage ds slept in that room but I wouldn't have put my younger kids in it, they wouldn't manage it safely and would have really hurt if it closed on them.

HelpMeTree · 11/11/2021 15:44

I had this growing up, it was great fun.

I’m sure you’ve thought of it but in a few years they’ll be less keen to share

Mum233 · 11/11/2021 15:48

Just to add as well. It’s a rental so it’s not a long term thing. Probably only a few years max x

If it's a normal staircase then I wouldn't worry.

A normal fire door is no more difficult to open than a non fire door, we have fire doors throughout the house and my 2&5 year old both manage.

Gingersay · 11/11/2021 15:52

We live in a 3 storey house with us on the top and kids in the middle floor it's great, but my kids are past the waking in the night stage I don't think it would work so well if the kids were younger.
We keep our bedroom door open at night but we also done this in our old house when we were all on the one level.

SockFluffInTheBath · 11/11/2021 15:56

I voted YABU but that sounds harsher than I mean it to! When DCs were about 4/5 we had the same arrangement and I had the same worries at first. We stayed that way for 8/9yrs and no issues at all.

tealandteal · 11/11/2021 16:12

My DS is above us and always has been but not in an attic. It was a pain when he was younger going up and down the stairs all the time but fine now he is 4. I usually hear him the minute he steps out of bed as he is directly above us.

Strangevipers · 11/11/2021 16:15

Always wanted an attic room

It's a kids dream

Don't overthink

You all like the house and the kids want the attic room. Just do it

PGordino · 11/11/2021 16:19

Let them have it.

I still want an attic room. Preferably an enchanted one.

SummerInSun · 11/11/2021 16:21

I'd prefer my kids to be above us, because then if someone breaks in (wildly unlikely) they couldn't get to the kids without goi g past our room and probably waking us up. Just make sure the house has good fire alarms which are all connected so if a fire breaks out on the top floor the ground floor alarm goes off.

icedcoffees · 11/11/2021 16:21

I had this growing up. I had the whole top floor to myself. I loved it and it was absolutely fine.

TheFormidableMrsC · 11/11/2021 16:31

My 10 year old has the loft room. I'm downstairs. Never been an issue. There are also fire doors as there should be.

loislovesstewie · 11/11/2021 16:42

Where I live there are streets and streets of 3 storey Victorian houses; we live in one. Oodles of people with kids, I don't think any are worried about this, as long as it was built that way (and ours were) there will be generations of kids who have slept in the top floor bedrooms.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/11/2021 16:55

If it’s three storeys, just please make sure it’s got fire doors throughout.

I don’t think then configuration of bedrooms really matters
