Root canal treatment - how long sore?

So Tues evening I had the first part of a root canal treatment on my back tooth. It's not filled with an antibiotic pack and temp cover. Expected to be in some pain and was still taking constant painkillers all Wednesday.
Managed to get sone sleep but woke up at 5 am with I assume referred pain in the tooth below. Took painkillers, pain moved back up top, tooth different painkillers and managed to sleep. By 9 in agony again.

Feels like a lump inside my cheek where I had the injection but it still hurts to eat because of jaw movement and still getting this referred pain in that side.

I'll need more painkillers my lunch time.

Dentist will see me TUESDAY.

Is this pain normal and I'm being a baby? I'm back I n3 weeks to finish it and thinking if I'm in this pain again it'll completely ruin a weekend away but my own fault I know

Mine was pretty uncomfortable for a day or two.
The next stage wasnt so bad.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 11/11/2021 12:33

Mine was only mildly sore, I wonder if you have an infection, which is very painful Flowers

The lump from the injection, ime you only get with bad dentists. I used to have it every single time and this dentists work never used to hold up well. I dreaded seeing her.

I started seeing a new (student!) dentist and not had it since. His work has held up very well and he is excellent with me being such a nervous patient. Unfortunately he has now left and I haven't met his replacement yet.

It should hurt for about 3 to 4 days then ease off but will be a bit sensitive and tender for months. If there is extreme pain then I suggest seeing a different dentist.

I had something similar, the dentist said sometimes the injection can hit a nerve. I also got lump and limited movement of my jaw. I borrowed max strength cocodamol from a neighbour and they were really good for the pain.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/11/2021 14:26

OK some reassurance that it isn't unheard of. He's a decent dentist, I've been with him for years.

I do wonder about ab infection as hot is still sore whilst cold isn't, but there is antibiotics in my tooth so assume that will be fine.

I have adult bonjela!

Mine was sore for about a week after each appointment. I was worried that meant it hadn't worked properly, but it had and it is all fine now with no pain whatsoever. Smile

BrightStarryNight · 11/11/2021 14:36

Ps hope you feel better soon, tooth pain is a horror!

Clarich007 · 11/11/2021 14:43

I had a front tooth root canal about 3 years ago, and I can honestly say I didn't have any pain at all. It felt different and sensitive though but no pain. I did go private though, as my dentist said he could do it with about 50% success rate but the private one i got 90%.. It did cost £700 though for 1 tooth!
Hope it improves for you soon

Mine was not sore at all. I’d be worried something is wrong if I had your symptoms and would try to see a different dentist.

PAFMO · 11/11/2021 20:03

Mine wasn't sore either. In fact it was way less uncomfortable than ordinary fillings, scale and polish or anything.

They're saying it needs to be him because he did it but if the pain is that bad again tomorrow I'll call back. Lump feels less... Lumpy and sore so maybe just swelling going down. He did end up giving me three injection and think this was the 2nd one

Mine was horrific during and just after but didn't wake me up. Could be the nerves upset around it maybe?

loubielou31 · 11/11/2021 22:54

When I actually had my root canal treatment and crown it was all pretty painless. Apart from having to keep my mouth open longer not worse than a normal filling. The infection and swelling that preceded this however was excruciating but had been treated and cleared with antibiotics beforehand. I hope you heal up soon.

NannyR · 11/11/2021 23:02

I've had several root canals and not really experienced any pain at all, either during or after. I would get checked out in case there is an infection.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/11/2021 23:04

The receptionist suggested it was cos I had my mouth open so long 😂

Mine didnt hurt at all once the local anesthetic wore off.

Even keeping my mouth open wasnt bad as they put in a rubber wedge in to pop it open which was more comfortable.
