Playing with sand table indoors

Traveller3367 · 10/11/2021 22:58

Bought a sand table for DS 18 months
Set it up indoors on laminate flooring so easier to hoover up sand.
DH thinks it's disgusting to play with sand indoors and nobody does this
AIBU to think it's fine to play with sand indoors on a hard surface which is cleaned straight after? Or is it as gross as DH makes out?

Yep that's a no from me. You will have sand through whole house. Didnt mind water play or bubbles or play dough but sand gets everywhere

Rainallnight · 10/11/2021 23:03

I don’t think it’s gross or disgusting. For me personally, it’s the sort of mess I’d keep outside but only because sand can be a bit slippy on hard floors and I couldn’t be bothered hoovering before someone breaks their neck!

2020isnotbehaving · 10/11/2021 23:04

Well it’s what nursery’s do nothing unhygienic about it but you will constantly have sand on the floor Even if you do it on one corner and hover after. If you can put up with Sandy feet go ahead!

DroopyClematis · 10/11/2021 23:06

No sand indoors, ever!

Why would you?

So you Hoover it up then have to buy more sand?!

It'll get everywhere.

Just don't.

But if you insist on it, then you need to clear it all up.

Mum6776 · 10/11/2021 23:09

I don't see why not. People have moonsand indoors. Yes it gets out but you can just vacuum it up.

Pinetreesfall · 10/11/2021 23:09

Sand makes a massive mess but we live right by the beach so large quantities of sand seem to be a common feature in my house especially in summer.
I find sand from the sand tray is easier to sweep up than hoover if / when it makes its way indoors! Hoover tends to just blow the sand further!

Babyshadows · 10/11/2021 23:11

It's fine, the sand you buy in shops is treated anyway. I would want to add water because I cba with that level of mess but the cleanliness aspect doesn't bother me.

TheKeatingFive · 10/11/2021 23:12

It's just sand. It's not disgusting. That's an odd thing to say.

In terms of whether YABU to have it inside, entirely depends on how much mess you can tolerate / are prepared to clean up.

AutumnInBustletown · 10/11/2021 23:13

Use lentils instead. Easier clean up.

Thatsplentyjack · 10/11/2021 23:13

Oh god no, even when the kids come home and they've had sand in their shoes it's a nightmare to get rid of.

Traveller3367 · 10/11/2021 23:17

Thanks for all the answers.
I do a full clean up asap once play over
Keep sand to the laminate flooring and dust off socks and feet
Dust pan and brush followed by hoover.
DS's sand table is tiny so 1 bag of sand will last for ages even with all the wastage
Yes it can be messy but I wouldn't call it disgusting either
Glad it's not just me
Maybe it's because the play sand is the closest I'll be getting to a sandy beach in a long time haha

Be careful, because walking and standing on the sand during play will scratch the surface of your laminate floor quite badly. Maybe better to put down a large mat you can hoover if you carry on doing it - but that will still tend to hold onto sand and allow it to escape elsewhere.

jetadore · 11/11/2021 08:55

Disgusting? No, play sand is clean! But I would keep sand and water play outside due to the inevitable mess. It will get everywhere despite best efforts at containment or cleanup.

Whereismumhiding3 · 11/11/2021 10:48

My cats would be delighted if my toddler DCs had had a sand table inside.... Huge litter tray Shock in the warm....

I'm with your DH no save table inside. But, it's treated sand from the shops, white and fluffy, not building sand!
It will get everywhere though, in the kitchen, bedrooms, sofas... so I'd recommend not! Nurseries may have them but they aren't domestic homes!

Marmite27 · 11/11/2021 10:50

Get a small sieve and an dustpan and brush.

Sweep up, put sand through sieve and back into the sand tray.

Could you get a tiff tray to stand it on to try and contain it? It will still get everywhere, but may help a little.

Marmite27 · 11/11/2021 10:51

tuff tray.

buzzandwoodyallday · 11/11/2021 16:53

Put an empty paddling pool down first and put the sand table in there so the mess is confined to the pool. Problem solved!

BlackeyedSusan · 11/11/2021 17:07

builders tray underneath. Just don't put it on carpet.
