Hello

Posting for traffic.

Long story short, marriage broke down, I had a mental breakdown, took overdoses, been in a psychiatric hospital for last 2 weeks.

ExH has got rid of the house (rented) and I am moving straight into my Dad's upon discharge from here.

I have never claimed a benefit before and I am so confused by it all, I also need to join the council list ASAP.

I cannot return to work for the foreseeable and I am only entitled to SSP. I am questioning whether to hand in my notice as I am simply too ill to work right now.

Where would I start with this?

For context I am 28 and have been on antidepressants since I was 15. I have a long history of depression and anxiety. It's all come to a head and my head is fried trying to work out financial help. I'm also heartbroken which probably doesn't help how I can't seem to get my head together at the moment.

Thank you xx

I'm sorry you're having such a rough time. I'm wondering if the hospital will signpost you to support agencies when they discharge you. First stop otherwise would be citizens advice bureau or Shelter.

Was this a compulsory hospital admission or voluntary? It will determine the level of support you're entitled to on discharge.

The charity Rethink have lots of advice specific to living with mental illness and practical things.

Usual advice on your specific question is not to resign and instead to wait for them to dismiss you through the capability process if necessary. Otherwise it can make claiming disability/sickness benefits difficult.

You can apply for new style ESA once the SSP runs out. But you should take support from Rethink and Citizens Advice and any support through CMHT for that.

Also apply for PIP which all the above can help with. PIP isn't means tested.

Even if you do decide to leave eventually I'd suggest putting that decision off whilst you've got so much still going on. Best wishes op.

There should be access to advice on the ward, whether that's through OT, an outside agency or the IMHAs.
You should be able to get support from the CMHT you are being discharged to the care of, and the MH trust should have a social care lead, who would look into that stuff for you. Good luck on your recovery and I hope you get the help with all the housing/benefits etc
