Hayfever in November.

Posting here for traffic. Dd age 6 gets hayfever quite badly. Usually worse March - May. Not so bad during June - August. Gets bad again September time!

But it's November and she's suffering badly this week - it's not a covid (or covid) because it's only really a morning thing when she wakes which is typical of her allergies.

I remember she suffered a bit in October last year but in November?!

Is it because it's been pretty mild? Hasn't been cold at all where I live!

I read somewhere about mould and fungal spores this time of year. Also read something about leaves and mould spores. We have a massive tree just outside. Her window is close to tree (not our tree, on communal grass). Leaves are everywhere. Could that be a culprit? I try and open her window a couple times a eeek this year but wondering if that's just making it worse so will be keeping it shirt.

Anyone else suffer this time of year? Nightmare with current times! But usually it's only mornings and evenings that are the worse and she's fine during school time.

I've considered dust mites and other allergens. But I've blitzed her bedroom. Hot washed, pillow, duvet and teddies. Vacuumed her mattress and her whole room etc. Got all the dust out of the radiators!

Any advice?

Also, what antihistamines do you use in your children? Or any other ideas what to use? We use children's Benadryl currently.

I suffer at the moment too. For years I thought it was hayfever until I got tested at the local hospital and it turned out that my worse allergy was dustmites and these are worse in October time usually but this year, it's also happening now, mainly due to the difference in temperature day/night which makes it a brewing ground for mould. I take antihistamines daily and have done so for over 20 years.

AntiHop · 10/11/2021 08:22

Yes I get it all year round. I've never heard of leaves being the culprit, but definitely dust and mould. I take anti histamines and beconase all year round. Ask a pharmacist if that's OK for a child.

Definitely open windows, airing out her room will help.

Weed pollen can still be circulating through November. My DD is still suffering atm. She uses one of those nasal powder sprays (not sure what the age range is on it though) and hay fever eye drops as she get very itchy eyes with it. They seem to help more than the tablets tbh.

I've just bought Dd the powder nasal spray. It's from 6+ so she's now old enough to use. Thanks!

Thanks. I have thought it's dust mites but I'm not sure. I have got all the dust out of radiators. I try and keep house as dust free too! But still happening!

Just yesterday. I hot washed her pillow and duvet, hoovered her mattress, wiped down her bed, vacuumed every bleddy part of her room. Teddies have been hot washed this week! But she's just as bad today! Worried I disturbed the dust a bit yesterday though!

@AntiHop I read somewhere about mould and leaves from them being wet and decaying. Mihjt not be accurate but we do have a very large tree outside and leaves have blown into the windows when open etc!

That might not be enough for your daughter in terms of dust mite control so I wouldn't discount the issue being dust mites, especially with the pattern of allergies typically worse in the morning. Found this out the hard way with my son.

Frymetothemoon · 10/11/2021 09:02

My first reaction when I read your post was to say dust mites. My allergy specialist told me this was a bad time of year for them.
You may have stirred things up with your big clean, which may explain why you haven't seen an improvement.
Does she have carpet? I see she has cuddly toys (Dr banned these for me), so try putting them in the freezer.
Mould is another possibility

Pumpkinsonparade · 10/11/2021 09:05

Window open at night.
Ds has allergies and asthma. Having the heating on makes him stuffy also.

If she’s this bad I’d suggest you see a GP amd ask for a referral so she can be tested.

There are a lot of mould spores this time of year, but it’s too late for tree pollen on the whole. I’m dreadful with dust - have to hoover twice a week thoroughly and have anti allergy bedding.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 10/11/2021 09:06

Also as others said big cleans can kick up dust into the air.

Gingernaut · 10/11/2021 09:10

It sounds like it's not hayfever, it might be chronic perennial allergic rhinitis

Dust, dust mites, dust mite faeces, mould and fungal spores along with pollens, perfumes - you name it, I'm allergic.

I take an antihistamine all year round.

scrillish · 10/11/2021 09:10

Allergy uk good for advice but to give you a picture of what is necessary in my house: hard floors hoovered every day. No toys at all in bedroom, everything in cupboards or put away. Expensive fully enclosed mattress dust cover, anti allergy duvet that gets hot washed at least once a month, proper pillow encasement cover (washing an anti allergy pillow on 60 like duvet was not enough). Curtains washed on a hot wash at least once a month and decent air purifier running in bedroom all the time. There is probably more. It's not easy.

Eightandahalfyears · 10/11/2021 09:11

My daughter and I take fexafenadine all year round.

usernamenumber636274 · 10/11/2021 10:33

Thanks all. I do try and keep my home as dust free as possible. Bedding is washed weekly as well as vacuuming mattresses. I vacuum the whole house every day but it is all carpet (apart from kitchen). She has soft toys but she's only allowed a specific 3 in her bed which I wash regularly. The rest are up High in a hammock which I do get down and wash a few times a year! Curtains in her room haven't been up long but will hot wash them soon too! My house isn't overly dusty as a whole. We only have curtains upstairs... blinds downstairs. I vacuum my sofa fully twice a week. Radiators have been cleaned down...

Considering changing vacuum cleaner. Right now I have a cordless dyson v7 and a Henry - Henry seems crap on carpet but I keep him for big diy jobs and the car. I did used to have a shark too but it broke...

I've just bought new anti allergy pillow protectors and new anti allergy pillows for her this morning now! See if it helps with regular washing!

Do you line dry laundry? I have to tumble dry everything as otherwise I'm just bringing pollen into the house on the laundry. Particularly bedding, if I line dry that, the DCs look like they have flu.

Pascal80 · 10/11/2021 10:51

I've been suffering with this terribly since 16th September when it appeared from nowhere. Streaming nose and constant sneezing and coughing. Benadryl and Fexofenadine are not stopping it. I don't know what it can be. It's bad.

I dry some stuff outside in the summer when it's hot but most things get tumble dried!

Bedding always gets tumble dried. Every since I dried it outside and didn't realise there was a massive spider on my bedding until I had out it back on 🙀🙀

I have always had a form of hayfever at this time of year, so did my Dad. Assume it is mushrooms/spores. It is always particularly bad when I come in from gardening, so have always assumed I disturb spores when digging or weeding. My garden is currently full of sprouting mushrooms and decaying leaves, so a perfect storm of fungal fun!

Interesting. There's loads of mushrooms around where h live at the minute on community grass areas. Only said this morning never known so many! Not so many in our garden though but definitely nearby!
