AIBU to ask for a promotion?

We have had several supervisors leave or get promoted recently and I am taking over their role (I thin given what I now do). I am being relied on increasingly for things I’ve not been trained for and am just piecing together. I’m working more shifts than before and get left alone to manage other staff. Would I be within reason to go to management and ask for a promotion? I’d get paid another £2+ p/h and would have more validity when asking staff to do things. Or would it be seen as greedy and self important?

Nothing greedy or self important about it. Go for it and report back!

So sad you'd only earn an extra £2 an hour 😢 but yeah absolutely for pitiful pay like that I'd expect every penny for working above my remit. Do it.

JFDI

You'd be an idiot not to. You're taking on the responsibility, get recognition for it. If they say no, drop the rope a bit.

TheKeatingFive · 09/11/2021 21:58

Go for it.

I wonder what percentage of men versus women worry about being seen as 'greedy and self important'?

An extra £2 p/h is a lot of money (for me) a week! It’s well above minimum wage and I’d be very happy with it and it would make a huge difference to our lives!!

Thank you all.. I need to put on my big girls pants and go ask!!

Thats the spirit! I cant see how they could say no. Good luck! ☘

Even if they do say no this time, it's good to put yourself out there. They're more likely to consider you next time.

Do it. Apparently the trick to get someone to agree to something is to ask them to confirm 3 factual statements that they can't disagree with. Eg, Are you aware that since A left I am the only person who is carrying out XYZ task? (Yes) And are you aware that since B was promoted, I have been picking up Task ABC as well? (Yes). And you know that I am the most experienced of the remaining staff? (Yes). You'll understand then why I believe I should be paid accordingly for these extra responsibilities?
Good luck!

allofthecheese · 09/11/2021 22:12

Definitely. Don't let them take advantage of you and they won't do it so you'll have to ask. I've recently asked the same as I know they would much prefer to just keep me on the same pay forever lol. Nope!

Thank you! I’m massively anxious about things but I’m obsessive about writing down things from most shifts.. what went well.. badly etc and what new things I’ve been asked to do. I write down my hours as we don’t always get paid properly and it’s just become a habit to add just a couple of sentences a day about what’s happened. I love the advice about staying 3 things.. I already have them all recorded with dates etc in my diary!!
