To ask for help with this simple Geography homework?

Completely stumped and Google is not my friend this evening.

If reading a simple 4 digit grid reference from a map, it is obvious when the feature is in the middle of the square so for example the Church is at 1630.

But what happens when the feature straddles 2 lines equally? So the caravan site - is it at 1531 or 1631?
Really feel like I should know this but any help gratefully received. Thanks

you could give 4 points of reference, or 3 points of reference showing the outline of the campsite? it's pretty rectangular
so like it's bounded by 4 points at 163324, 177324, 160300 and 180300??
(i can'T see the picture very well so don't use those)

Brefugee · 08/11/2021 20:53

or is it just the little blue caravan at 160312?

SheilaWilcox · 08/11/2021 20:55

I would say 1631 because if you were using 6 figure references it would be 160 312, so you just take off the 3rd digit.

ViceLikeBlip · 08/11/2021 20:59

The numbers refer to the corners, not the centres of the squares.

RunningFromInsanity · 08/11/2021 21:02

Technically it could be either but I would have said 1631

Newuname199987 · 08/11/2021 21:02

Yes Vice is correct. In your church example it is at 164 305

Newuname199987 · 08/11/2021 21:04

If 4 digits then caravan park is 1631

RunningFromInsanity · 08/11/2021 21:05

@Newuname199987

Yes Vice is correct. In your church example it is at 164 305
Which when doing to just 4 figures is 1630, so the OP is also correct.

You use the bottom left corner of the square to indicate anything in that square.

But when it’s right in the line, it could probably be classed as in either square.

Another vote for 1631

Boombastic22 · 08/11/2021 21:06

1631

chayago · 08/11/2021 21:08

I think you need to use 6-figure grid references instead of 4, unless instructed otherwise.
If your child is in 7th grade, it’s part of the curriculum so they usually request it after the kids learn about 4-figure grids.

So it would be 160 312. Xx

Here’s a slide that explains it well (using the same map as an example) :

And a game to practice :
vdocuments.net/6-figure-grid-references-loby-the-end-of-todays-lesson-i-will-be-able-to-use-6-figure-grid-references-accurately-start-game.html

crosstalk · 08/11/2021 21:10

Coming back to the game! But OP whose homework is it?

MsWalterMitty · 08/11/2021 21:10

@Brefugee

or is it just the little blue caravan at 160312?
This is correct. But I’d the question asking for 6 fig or 4 fig?

If 6 fig you need to imagine each square being split in to 100 little squares

Cuck00soup · 08/11/2021 21:12

Are you expected to look at other things on the map too? The caravan site probably wouldn't be in the middle of the road /river. So that makes it 1631 not 1531.

Caveat. I am officially shit at map reading. Grin

MsWalterMitty · 08/11/2021 22:46

I’m a geog teacher and mountain leader… and self certified map geek!!, so happy to help

Minkribs · 09/11/2021 21:08

Thanks all - we went with 1631. I guess we’ll see if the teacher agrees soon!
